Best way to start bar tape?

Clearly and nicely
As I remember, when wrapping the way you showed, I don't use this small piece of tape going over the lever's clamp.
The "knot" around the hoods itself should be sufficient to cover all gaps, though.

It should mean you don't have to use the 'cheat tape', yes - but sometimes you still need to depending on the levers and the bar shape, just to make sure everything is totally covered.

In all honesty I just prefer wrapping this way - nothing to do with not wanting or needing to use the cheat tape, but just how I like to do it.

Park tool shouldn't even stick to making tools. Most are complete crap, barely adequate for the home user.

I'm on about the switch of directions at the hoods to prevent unwinding. Not the neatness of the job in the photos.
