Trek 2300 with carbon maintubes. I love the purple. The wheels are not the ones for this bike, they are for another bike. I am waiting for some purple Sapim nipples to build the wheels that this bike will wear.

Current Spec -updtaed
Ritchey Pro bars 244g
Modolo brake levers 244g
Cinelli Grammo stem 184g
105 threaded headset ~105g
New 1055 crankset with a new 7400 53T chainring and purple chain ring bolts. 720g
Shimano UN55 68x113mm BB 298g
Look Arc pedals 334g
New 1056 front mech
Old 1056 rear mech 256g
HG50 12-21T 8 speed cassette 230g
KMC Z82 chain
Old 1055 brakes
Thomson 26.8mm seatpost cut down (178g) with coke can shim for 27.0mm seat tube.
Sella Italia SLR XP seat 190g
Cinelli bar tape. 40g
Shimano D/T shifters SL S434
GP4000s tyres and supersonic tubes.
Cheap heavy alloy bottle cages these have to go.
Veloman computor.
Wheels Kinlin XR-200 rims 28H front and rear Novatec A291 and F482 hubs Sapim laser spokes with purple alloy nipples. 1362g

Current weight with old spec pedals, computor and two heavy bottle cages but without pump, bottles and saddle bag is 8.88kg or 19.54 lbs. Now it is 8.26g as if 12/12/2012

The wheels it will be getting will be Kinlin XR-200 with Novatec A291/F482 hubs, CX-ray spokes and purple nipples. These will weigh 1370g hopefully they will be durable for me (~79-80kg), they will be an experiment.

I wish I was better at taking pictures, a better camera would help so would washing the bike. Trek's of this era look so much better without Trek all over the bike and sometimes the rider.

Pics now in post further down.

Looks great to me! I had that same frame in silver and I enjoyed it while I had it ~10 years ago? Keep having fun on it and post pictures when you are done with the upgrades!

Great vintage build. At 80kg I think i would pass on the XR-200 rims and go for the XR-270.

The XR200 will be 28 spoke front and rear and are an experiemnt to see if they can be reliable for my weight, I may break them but the rims are not expensive so I am not worried. I buy everything trade.

Some changes afoot. I am building the wheels. I will post phot's when done but the rear weighs in at 762g, I will use veo plugs to shave anopther few grams and the skewer weighs 35g. I also hop I win the Cinelli Grommo stem of ebay and ?I have found a set of threaded forks which are carbon but with a Ti steerer. They weigh 340g. All these changes should drop alot of weight.

I have built up the front wheel today. Xr-200 rim black Sapim laser spokes, purple alloy nipples, Novatec A291 28H hub laced 2x although with a flange that small I could have laced it 3x.

Anyway front wheel weight is 601g and the skewer is 30g. 28 yellow veloplugs are 5g
The rear wheel with GP4000s tyre, Continental Race28 supersonic tube 28 veloplugs, skewer, Shimano 8 speed HG 50 12-21T cassette with a total weight of 1313g. I am very pleased with that.

A total of 220g will be knocked of with the correct wheels now as the wheels it had are now on the red bike where they belong. With a the addition of carbon bottle cages a further 70-80g is being dropped of. That will take the weight down to 8.6 kg.

I do some photo's on Monday and weight the bike to confirm it's weight. It's a start but a long way to go.

Photo's to follow when there is some sunlight.

Wheels fitted today.
Changes so far;

Modolo brake levers 230g
Carbon bottle cages 28g each
Wheels rear 762g
Wheels front 600g
Novatec skewers 65g/pair
Velo plugs x 56 10g
Weight saved 400g

On it way from spain is a Cinelli Grammo Ti quill stem, that will shed more weight.
Parts yet to buy (I am watching a few on ebay)
Dura ace 7800 cranks -I;ll be using a 6600 crankset for the forseeable future
Durace 7800 rear mech - now got a 6600 rear mech
Durace 7800 front mech band on 34.9mm
Miche supertype 10 speed cassette - I won't be buying this now as I have dura ace cassettes instead.
10 speed chain
Planet X brakes - I keep on changing my mind
Look Keo blade pedals - look ar's will have to do for now

The expensive part will be the carbon forks with Ti threaded steerer. Keeping the fork threaded and a quill stem is my nod to the period of the bike. All this should bring the weight down to about ~7.4kg maybe a little less.
I'll stop there as that will be light enough for this old bike.

Well it has just got lighter. I have fitted a pair of Look Arc pedals that weight 334g that 120g lost. They cost me not about £10 as I got a 4 sets of Look delta pedals for £30 + some chain ring bolts. My kind of deal.

Given my budget restrictions I have had to curtail my ambitions for this bike so as these were cheap, allow me to keep the same cleats as I have on my other bikes and are lighter than 1056 pedals on they go.

I now weighs 8.26kg.

On the way though is a S/H Ultegra 6600 rear mech and a S/H Dura ace 7401 rear mech both of which are about 200g. I think there will be tuning of the rear mech how far I will go I have not decided yet. I will how ever also be fitting the 10 speed dura ace cassette that is coming too. I also have a 6600 crankset to go on. All of that will save another 300g a bit more if I do tune the rear mech. Also I need to by a dremel and have a go at shaving weight of the seat tube front mech braze on clamp as I cannot afford the ones on offer at Fair wheel bikes.

I also have a 9 speed Ti dura ace cassette on it way as well which I might use instead of the 10 speed one. I'll see.

I really want to find a 7402 crankset now but them I would have to be buy a Ti axled BB like a Phil wood or TA specilaites but that will get expensive so I probably won't.

I am hoping for about 7.9kg soon.

Nearly there.

In the post today a FD-6600 short cage -207g
Fitted a FC-6600 172.5mm 53/39T -750g with all fittings
BB-6700 -91g
KMC 10-93 chain 248g with master link.

Bits removed
1055 crankset 170mm 53/39T -719g
UN-55 BB 68x113mm 298g
FD-1056 short cage -256g
KMC 8-93 chain -300g with master link

Weight saved 277g.

On the scales it now weighs 7.97 kg or 17.57 lbs

My Durace cassettes should arrive very soon so another smaller weight drop on the horizion.

Shame the roads are not suitable for this bike at the moment, it either ice or heavy rain which means lots of flints. I am having no luck with tyres at the moment. Everything I try is puncturing.

A number of changes.

1) FD clamp modified and 6g lost.
2) bottle cage nuts, there are steel studs bonded into the frame, replaced with alloy nuts
3) purple chain ring bolts fitted instead of the steel ultegra ones
4) purple alloy FD mount bolt fitted and a purple alloy anchor bolts for boths mechs
5) KCNC CB1 brake set 176g replacing the the 382g Shimano 1056 brake set.
6) Ti bolts set for Thomson elite seatpost. originals 21g new ones 12g.
7) Dura ace 9 speed part Ti cassette 158g I seem to remember replacing the 242g HG50 8 speed cassette.
Also Ti bolts for left hand ultegra crank arm.

Weight now 7.68 kg or 16.9 lbs Very happy now. From the weight saved it should be 7.643g or 16.81 lbs but as my luagage scales have been used for all the bike weighing so far I will have to stick to them. I do have doubts about there accuracy now.

Still waiting for the mech tuning kit comprising of a complete set of alloy bolts for the rear mech and limit scres for the frot mech. Next will be carbon pulley's and a fibre light cage.

Then replacement forks carbon with Ti threaded steerer.

7 kg is the long term target.

Just set up the brakes properly and those KCNC anchor bolts are abit iify. I had to torque to the point the allen key was beinging to slip to get it to bite on the cable. I think I should have roughened up the anchor plate first to get it to bite more. The bolt is holding but will need to be replaced when it comes to cable changing time.

Also when torquing the anchor bolt I had to hold the brake caliper arms to stop it twisting. I hope it is not too flexy when riding. I will test ride in the light tomorrow.

Edit- brakes tested they feel fine. Now for more weight loss on the bike that is.
