That's fast. I was just about to pop the question on the weight disparity between the front and rear brakes as well.

So no one here has any first hand experience on this brakeset yet?

Frankly, the price to weight ratio is pretty good imo.

Hi,

This is what the German to English translation comes up with on Engage's website:

Thanks to its more compact kinematics at its back wheel, it meets the demands of lower brake forces at the back wheel.

Not really helpful if at all so I guess we'll have to wait to find out more.

BTW, since someone mentioned sanding away the white stripe, if you sand off all of the clearcoat you reduce the weight by about 5g.
Furthermore, as most of you probably know, the actual average weight of a set is 130g not the 145g as often stated.

Especially since prces are falling lately. I've seen them for as little as 267 euro.

So the rear brake is just less "beefy", due to lesser demands being placed on it?

Come to think of it, what is the cable holder, and which brake(s) does it go with? Does that contribute to some of the reported front vs. rear weight disparity?

As this does not come with brake pads included, what would be a good holder?

The engage ones look much thicker and its quite heavy.

Fdegrove,
would you mind giving me the link to where I can find it at the price you mentioned?

Many thanks!

Hi,

Here's the link to the shop I quoted the price from:

http://www.hergarden.de/rennrad-teile/bremsen/2596/engage-gavial-bremse-carbon?c=1185

This one sells the complete set, i.e. brake pad holders + pads, all in for a good price too:

http://jedi-sports.de/Brakes/Brakes-Road/engage-Gavial-Brake-Set-incl-engage-brake-shoes::4256.html

Annoyingly you'll only know the exact weight of the padholders if you know the weight of the pads. Nonetheless, while not ueberlight, they're not ueberexpensive either.

If it were me I'd go for a full carbon holder such as AX's own, Tune (lighter it would seem) or one of the asian offerings a la Jagwire, Ashima and what have you.

Basically that's what it boils down to I suppose.

The cable holders are the metal parts on the scale in the pic above. I assume these weigh 5g each, one for each brake, hence the 10g lumped.

So, are these ever going to be available in the US? Is AX Lightness coming back to the US?

Just curious...even Fairwheel doesn't sell their stuff any more.

Save your money.
PROS vs Sram Red Aero
- Lighter
CONS:
-Lighter- too many compromises
-No adjustment to help center (ie, keep the gap even on both sides of the rim)
-Spring return not great
-No quick release for easy wheel changes
-Poor design brake pad holders (including hokey cotter pin)
-Feels very cheap

Very disappointed. Got them for a new build of a S-Works Roubaix b/c thought they would be cool. Came right off and ordered new SRAM's, which I should have done in first place. (PS, not a review of SRAM vs Shimano vs Campy, although, IMO, the SRAM are a great bit of engineering.)
