Seems that the fastest ascent record dates still from those years.

Bullshit. Is there actually a list anywhere? And was it used in the same place during the race?

Even if you go back to the 80's the times on basically everything aren't even peloton speeds now.

Hilarious to look at some of those times from the mid-late 1990's and into the 2000's compared to the last couple years

Aside from the obvious you need to account for the race situation which affects the time.

Unlike Evans, Wiggins has a really well drilled train to shelter him in the mountain. Someone on this forum said it was a £1 man pulling a £1million man pulling a £1.5 million man, who has a £2 million WC man to fetch his water bottle. (The last part probably won't be true in 2013). So I'd say he could be a podium contender. A winner is a stretch should the hills prove steep.

The 100th Tour looks to be a great year. Lots of great GC contenders. I hope they all could make it to the Tour. I also hope Cav get away from Sky. If you guys have seen British Cycling road to glory it's pretty clear that Cav is definitely going. It it weren't for the Olympic I wasn't even sure that he would come to Sky. Great for him to be in the GC winning team and back to his old pals, but it doesn't mean much for him professionally. If he got a good train going at the OPQS the Green Jersey race would be awesome, with Sagan, Degenklob, Goss, the Gorilla etc.

1991, the year EPO really started to make it in the big time? And Greg didn't partake, and couldn't keep up?

According to INRNG, Rodriguez and Henao did the Sormano in 9m20s
Baldini's time written on the tarmac is 9m24s.

So it's not that bullshit.

The Giro route was revealed, here's a rundown from inner ring http://inrng.com/2012/09/2013-giro-unveiled/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Looks to be a good route, several lessons from Vuelta as far as short mountain stage included. We don't have to wait a week to see some gradients. Lots of TTing though, including an uphill one.

If you consider that the Sormano was only used on a the Giro de Lombardia on the 60's, ( so the records then skipped the EPO era), and that this year's was made on wet roads then it is sure right.

60's Sormano climbs were the pushing festival thus they removed this climb from the race.
Yesterday times, even slightly faster, has been done with no pushing helps, atleast for the main contenders; behind them I'm sure many get helped because already on Valcava many were suffering.

In order of importance
.road/tarmac (this particular one resurfaced recently, beside....Italian roads are on par with 50 years ago= generally terrible)
.gearing
.bikes
improved in 50 years so it's hard to compare even if that/those 60s record(s) had been "push" free...

Not sure about Indurain being clean but benefit of the doubt, but getting rid of the known dopers - is this the new top five of rankings?

When Bjarne Riis says he doesn't "understand that guy" in a 2008 documentary it might refer to his unwillingness to follow "the program", I have been thinking.

Saturday's race showed that the Muro di Sormano is a great addition to the race, asphalt art and all. If they did the big road the descent would be just the same, and that's were important selections were made.
Getting down the Sormano in the rain is a bit like getting through the normally moist Arenberg, and interestingly they're appx. the same distance from the finish these days.
Bianchi-Campagnolo
The Specialissima
Gylne Gutuer, the UCI 1.2 bike race I invented.
