My height is 164 cm. saddle height is 65.5 cm from the center of BB to top of saddle, pretty much a small guy, would I be good with a 29er? Cuurently riding a 26er.

* Wouldn't a 29er bike look like a BMX with huge wheels and a tiny frame? Im eyeing on the Scott scale 29er as a xc race bike.
Or shall I stay with 26er and wait for 650b?

need some inputs with this.

You'll be fine on a 29er, I ride with a women who is shorter than you, (about 157cm) and she rides a 29er (SS has it happens), you do need to choose a frame carefully though as some don't scale towards the smaller end as well as others, she rides an on-one (Scandal I think).

Depends on where you ride and how skilled you are.
If it is mostly open fire roads and flowy trails it will be fine.
If it is singletrack with tech sections and lots of tight switchbacks it will be terrible.
I am 179 cm tall and find that 26" is a better size for me.
(Though I could be swayed by 650b when nice xc full sus bikes are finally available in that size).

"crossposting" is not gentlemanlike, but maybe its usefull for gifted child to see the proportions of a small 29er.. ;-)

sorry for off topic!

@gifted child

if you look for a good fitting 29er, please take care of a very short headtube, negativ(-17°) Stem, 80mm Fork travel, and a slightly higher BB drop(57mm on our Quirings)....esp. for a racing bike.

You dont need as much saddle-bar drop(-3cm on my bike) on a 29er(in relation to a 26" Bike), but every milimeter of a lower bar is a good mm for shortys like us! Your Saddle high seems very low(685mm on our bikes!), maybe you have very short legs? In this case, put an eye on 650b!

another 2 cents: light and stiff wheels are very usefull too!!!

try it out rhys.

my wife who stands as tall as you, went back to 26 after a month on a 29.
she finds it hard to go around twitchy single tracks.

on the other hand, ask Noy, as he stands about 157.5cm and races a 29

I'm 5'6"/167cm, and here's my bike. I race "pro" XC. Stem has been lowered since this picture was taken. Have about 1cm of saddle to bar drop right now.

Same frame that just won the marathon World Championship. Mass produced chinese carbon.

Sold by probably a dozen companies under various names. Seriously, just search for "carbon 29er frame" on Alibaba.com or ebay and you'll find it. Seller e_baygoods is who I bought mine from. FR211 I think was the name they gave it.

Check also Niner bikes, they have also XS frames on the 29" and they have the best 29" geometry..
