Super Record 11 Rear Mech Failure - any others out there ?

sorry for confusing you. yes mr_tim is right. was shifting from 21 (3rd to last) to 23 (2nd to last) when it happened.

rd didnt touch a spoke at all, i wasnt even on the last cog yet and rd didnt get into the wheels as ive said initially. yes, im lucky!

Approx how many miles on this unit when it broke?

got the rd back from the retailer last night. not bad 4day turnaround.
the upper/lower knuckles and parallelogram assembly were replaced. they installed the existing cages, bolts and dirty pulleys back.

I had a bloke come in shop with a chorus mech all carbon that gave up in a similar way. I suppose the aluminium cages were more likely to bend before breaking you normally had a bit of warning.

All carbon? It's allloy on Chorus and Record isn't it?

in my case the mech had done just over 2000km - no more. If it had been my main bike,that would have been a month and half of riding at best.

As much as I love the new SR carbon rd, I am happy with my older Record 10spd set up. It may weigh more and not be as blingy but dang if I'm not worried about it snapping on me like that. Now don't get me wrong, if I had the money, I would buy the SR in a heart beat, breaking be damned!

Glad you got it repaired! I'm assuming they warrantied it all for you right?

I pressed by the speed of the warranty work. Although I would have returned it... clean!

My rear mech has done exactly the same thing. The derailleur simply sheared off whilst going slowly on a gravel path. Must have been something to do with the vibrations going through the bike because it was not caught in the spokes, rather the fracture occurred whilst changing up. Luckily I pulled over and stopped before the mech went into the rear wheel. Given the thin nature of the material at this point, perhaps this is a design flaw. My mech ia a 2011 version also.

Quite understand. My pics are a day old having used the derailleur for three years without fault.
I just wanted to re-iterate that these mechs are prone to failure, not because of incident damage caused by crashes or spoke snagging, but because of an engineering anomaly. Perhaps the carbon-encased spring is vibrating/ expanding and causing the resin to crack over time?
Either way, this is not a time-specific problem.

Yeah I've seen a few SR RDs that have failed in the exact same place at my LBS

Was talking to my mech other day about upgrading to SR11, he said the lifespan is approx 2 years and that is the EXACT place he sad they have lots if problems, either the carbon is badly molded to begin w or it cracks. He think SR11 is a 2-year product, said Record better choice if you are looking for longer life. Also complained of the Ti parts inside (like screws) he said not nearly as durable as steele. This is a very high end place that sees a lot of expensive parts and grupose all day... too bad as I was salivating for Sr11 net year... hmm

yes, mine failed as well...slightly lower where it sheared off and dumped into my spokes. my Enve wheels held up, but the rear derailleur hanger tore off as well. lots of carnage.

who repairs them? i still have the broken pieces in a zip lock somewhere.
