Anynother users out there find this comes loose? I have now tried a Tune Gum Gum with success but does the steerer need the support of the dale top cap?

I found the same thing so I pulled it out and put carbon paste around expander before tightening again.
Second question, I prefer the added support the top cap provides. I tried a Extralite expander and could see the steerer deformed when stem was torqued.

Are you now using the standard top cap again. I was thinking of getting an ultrastar for my evo build.

Have installed the standard cap again with carbo grip, but if it slips at all will go back to gum gum. This does reinforce the steerer too.

Thanks for your heads up, I just bought a Evo and will keep an eye on the topcap. Interesting idea, so you do not need to remove the preload when tweaking the stem as I dial in the fit.
Let's finish the ride with a 20% grade.

Back to gum gum but this does need a lot of tightening to get the right preload on the headset

You do not add preload with a gum gum, you first set preload with a real expander such as the stock one then remove and install your gum gum/tune cap ect.

If you do this, wha is the point of the gum gum?

Just to have the top cap something to screw onto. And oh, weight savings :)

As for me, after everything's torqued down properly, I remove the expander plug and just put a small amount of super glue on the top cap and screw.

Typical savings are 35-50 grams, lots of grams for the buck, even go cheap with an omni racer carbon cap/expander at $15 and 15 grams, did that one on my Super X and the tune/gum gum on the Evo(14 grams).

gumgum worked just fine on my first ride with it on my evo. it was a very small ride, like 5 miles, but I intentionally hit as many potholes as I could just to try it. all handed fine so far. on a less note, my mechanic did all for me, as Im still learning my way into assembling all parts.
