I'm looking to build up a new set of wheels for my gravel/cross bike.

Has to be disc-brake friendly.
Lightweight.
Rider only weighs 150#.

I'm thinking ENVE 29XC rims set up tubeless, DT180s, and Sapim CXRays. Thoughts?

What tires do you plan on running? 29er rims are pretty wide for a 'cross tire.

dt 180s are gonna be shot down on this forum. for pretty good reason, too. check fairwheel bikes' most recent hub review.

ENVE 29er XC rim is really wide as mentioned. I mounted 33c Clement PDX and they measured 38mm. Also, they have a really deep tire bed which needs to be built up a ton with tape to get many tires to seat well.

Surprised Notubes IronCross and Crest 29er have not been mentioned yet. Easier on the wallet than carbon ...

Is rim width an issue? Meaning how it influences the tire.

You can opt for a cheaper yet reliable aluminum rim from Stans and lace it with a nice hub and still end up with a great and lite wheel.

I have used and recommend:

Stans Alpha 340s - 385g, 17mm wide (also works well with road tires)

If you want to go bigger

Stans Iron Cross - 385g, 20mm wide

BGG

I run a 29er wheelset (Hope Pro2 EVO on Stans Crest) on my road commuter, with 28mm Conti GP4Seasons. The tyres are VERY tight though. If you want to run 'cross tyres on a 29er rim then I'd check if they'll fit okay first.

For my next disc wheelset set I'm going to go handbuilts - Velocity A23 tubeless rims (non-machined) on whatever disc hubs I have available - maybe the Hopes, maybe not, we'll see.

For factory wheels, Easton have just shown their new EA90 XD disc wheels at Eurobike see

Not sure on price though.

I am thinking Stans Alpha 400 or Velocity A23. Both are wide rims. Both are tubeles ready now. 3x lacing pattern for me with disc brakes, on king, DT Swiss, Hope, Novatec or Shimano hubs depending on budget and other considerations.

Spaim D-l;ight spokes could be a good choice, alternitively just sapim race will do the job well.

You could always do the 3.4 clinchers in tubeless as well. The 26mm width up front and 24mm in back may be a bit more of a safe midddle ground for cross. With regards to the hubs, I think the DTs are pretty over priced considering what you get. You would be better off waiting for the new Alchemys or going with something like a T11 from White Ind.

For this build, I ended up deciding that ENVE was a bit out of the budget, and went with the Iron Cross. I did get a good deal on DT240s, and I've been very pleased with them on 2 other wheelsets, so I am going to sport those again.

I'll be running tubeless, with Continental Cyclocross Speeds.
