Hi,

Usually wear tights with bibs underneath all through the winter from autumn. Have found them quite warm in the past above about 0-5c.

Wondering how many of you wear a thermal bib short, such as Assos T607, with roubaix fleece style legwarmers?

Worth trying and keeping the bibs for the coldest days? Live in Scotland so never gets particularly cold.

Thoughts?

What about thermal bib knickers with leg warmers. That's what I use (Pacific Northwest climate). Gives you an extra layer on the knees, where they are needed. Plus you can combine with tall wool socks such as Defeet to get good coverage up the lower leg.

I have a nice set of windproof thermal tights but rarely use them because they are too warm. At the temperatures I would use them, ice typically becomes a factor and I head to the trainer instead.

Never really been a fan of 3/4s. Always felt they were a bit of a compromise.

I haven't tried them but Rapha also make thermal bibs. At 0oC I need tights. Above 5oC I wear 3/4 bibs.

If it's cold enough to need legwarmers with thicker shorts it's not going to be warm enough to ever need to take the legwarmers off, so it's better IMHO to wear tights as nothing falls down, no bunching behind the knee happens and it's no more expensive than buying separate bibs and warmers.

I find Castelli's tights with pads to be very comfortable, with their mid range ones being more than adequate for general cool / damp UK winter rides and the top range fluido nanoflex ones only needed for very cold / wet protection.

I have wanted a "bunch" of those to wear alone on northern summer days, with kneewarmer as 3/4 or with legwarmers
to finally get a pair of long enough bibs without any alterations since I read a pro teams inventory list some years back.

Even though I use Assos 3/4 and like them the weird elastic put me off.
Anyone else makes them? Or are they pro only.

DHB from Wiggle also do some Roubaix fleece shorts. I use them with some leg and knee warmers to great effect.

I am a right southern pansy though.

I usually wear thermal bib tights when it gets to 5c, mainly because its a nice thicker layer up on your body as well. When it has been particularly cold and I'm out playing in the snow I have doubled up in the past with bibs+legwarmers and then bib tights over the top of that and has been toasty with nothing more than a LS baselayer, thermal jersey and a windstopper.

Though I also dress like that when I'm going to CX races and strip off down to the first layer a couple of minutes before the start.

I find the thermal bibs with warmers to work fine on cold, dry days. However, on cold, wet days I always found that the warmers, no matter how warm, always got cold from the water they held. So last year I tried Rapha embrocation cream with thermal bibs (no warmers, bare legs) on cold wet days. I'm talking days where there's snow falling amongst the rain as well. It worked great! I couldn't believe the difference. Abit chilly at first, but you warmed up fast.
If you ever watch Belgian racing in february/ march, you'll see pros riding in snow with no tights. It's because they use embrocation.
I use the Rapha myself but I've heard great things about mad alchemy as well.
A few words of warning though.
1. Put the cream on after your shorts. It only takes one time accidentally getting it on your chamoise to know why this is important.
2. Make sure the kids aren't home when you shower afterwards. I promise that even the toughest sailor would curse up a storm when hot water contacts this stuff.
There's an added bonus as well. Show up on a freezing group ride with no warmers or tights on and your toughness will never be doubted again.lol

I've worn my new Assos T.607_S5 bibs with the legWarmers_s7 in conditions down to 5 deg C dry and 9 deg C rain and hailstorm. They work splendidly together, especially since I'm an anatomic anomality: My bibs are size M and the leg warmers size II.

Try this for roubaix bibshorts

http://www.wiggle.co.uk/dhb-vaeon-rouba ... t/?pr=1068" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

It says on Wiggle

Vaeon – for Autumn weather.
Vaeon Roubaix - for general Winter weather.
Vaeon Reflex - for general Winter weather and low light conditions.
Vaeon Zero - for coldest weather (dont think this range is out yet as the link doesnt work).

Ah, of course. Shorts are categorised under 'Tights' and not 'Shorts'. Stupid me.
