But isn't that combo pretty expensive? Know what I can get with carbon rims. Can probably get a really good deal on a pair of AX-Lightness Standard 24mm that are lighter.

Focus Carbon in china do a 260g 24mm deep carbon tub rim. That built 24 front and 28 rear with Novatec
a291SB and F482SB hubs would be under 1100g. Those rims are not too expensive but I am only assuming they are decent rims.

Interesting that you recommend carbon rims when asking for aluminium. Got a pair of FFWD F2R DT190 wheels that I can use if I want light and low profile carbon fibre wheels. Also have a pair of 50/85mm cheep china carbon fibre wheels. But looking for alternatives instead of Campagnolo Shamal wheelset that at the moment seems to be the best allround aluwheel for tubular and Campagnolo.

Damm it was following on from that post about renoyld carbon rims. Should have read the thread title more carefully. It bed time I think, I'm tired.

I think the velocity and Kinlin options have been mentiuoned already and you don't want Mavic or ambrosio rims. All of these are going to be similar weight to the Sharmels but less money depending on hubs used.

I've got a set of Ambrosio Chronos on FRM hubs, both 28h. Ride quality is wonderful and they are 1408g. I don't believe there is a more beautiful rim.

I see you've had these rims before. Why change?

Was lightening my caad10 and sold my Ambrosio wheelset and got a 300g lighter FFWD F2R DT190 instead. Agree with the beautiful thing, but my set seemed little boring and not so fast or stiff, just comfy and good looking.

Here is a 23 mm wide tubular aluminum rim recommended to me. Weight not ultra light but a very robust wheel set
Velocity Major Tom Tubular Rim

Alchemy hubs with the following rims:
The Velocity Major Tom is a 23mm wide tubular rim designed specifically for cyclocross. Blending qualities from the popular A23 clincher and Escape tubular rims, the wider Major Tom provides improved traction for unmatched ground control.

The 23mm wide rim allows for better tire performance, gives a larger contact surface for gluing tires and adds strength without adding weight. The Major Tom not only has a wider contact surface, but also features a seam relief channel down the center to help with consistent tire placement.

Velocity increased the height of the braking surface to 11mm for precise handling and braking.

Ideal use: cyclocross, road racing and training

Additional Information:
• Weight: 432g
• Rim depth: 21mm
• Rim width: 23mm
• Color: Black
• Hole count: 24, 28, 32, 36
• ERD: 596mm
• Sidewall: Machined sidewall only
