Very nice budget. Those wheels definitely are holding you back. Maybe try your hand at building a set?

Do you know, I've been thinking just that.

A store in the uk has a sale on the stans 355 rims as a pair. Just seems a shame to build them with what is probably plain gauge spokes and formula hubs that are sure to be neither long lasting, light or that free spinning. That said, i believe it would allow me to run the bontrager 496g tyres tubeless and would shave a whole heap of weight off the right spot....

We ll see...

Have received and fitted some aluminium bolts. in black to match bike. ill be the first to admit it seems a little pointless when there are so many other pressing matters, but cost wise the bolts were £1.15 each so total cost for three needed under £5er shipped.

2 x M6 / 16mm for the shimano brake lever clamps
1 x M6 / 12mm SRAM X5 rear shifter clamp

steel bolts weight total:

15g

Aluminium bolts weight total:

5g

so, -10g for under £5. and removed some ugly tarnished bolt heads. i think thats an ok deal.

How much are the rims? I found some for £79.96 each.

I just planned out a rough build at c.£260GBP (without all the shipping)...

Hubs: - BHS - £77.55 (not inc. shipping)
Rims: - 355's from Merlin's - £159.92 (not inc. shipping)
Spokes: Double Butted Silver ACI's - CycleBasket - £23.01 (inc. shipping)

I'm not sure what the ACI's come in at, but assuming they're 8g each my (shaky) maths says 1,636g.

I find the cannondale trail sl frame to be just what the doctor ordered really!

It feels like you are riding a carbon flash so far as size, positioning, handling etc. stiff enough in the BB. Stiff everywhere really.

Where it differs from a flash is in weight;
trail sl 1900g
flash Ali 1400g
flash int mod 1100g
flash hi mod 950g

And in comfort. The trail sl has 'save' rear triangle with flattened chain stays with save written on them, but this is just marketing really as having ridden a flash carbon and a turine carbon which both do take the buzz/ sting out of the trail, and the save seat post on the hi mod flash extends that to near scapel comfort, the trail sl just feels like any other good Ali hardtail.

OK LISTEN UP!

YOUR NOT GONNA BELIEVE THIS!

So when we last looked at the black bike it was essentially finished all be it with a very heavy set of standard SL3 wheels. No prospect of a lighter set on the tight budget! right!

your thinking, why is there now a set of ritchey one on, with DT Swiss 240 hubs and a lush red SRAM 990 cassette....

well, i was donated them by a fantastic WW member from across Europe! wouldnt take any money for them just said the rear hub was broken and they were buckled! Not sure if he would want to be embarrass him by giving his name out. but im sure your as surprised as me! and impressed.

A BIG THANK YOU!

the wheels are slightly buckled yes, and the rear hub was a challenge but i managed to fix the freehub problem for free!
