 Post subject: Urban 26" Tyres

Can anyone suggest a good 26" tyre for urban use on a singlespeed, something durable, a bit of tread/grip, light, but not too pricey?

Appologies for asking something thats probably been asked many times before.

A bit of both would be nice, but nothing thats too fragile, I dont want a heavy tyre, and it doesnt have to be lightning quick. :)

The only reason that I ask is because I am looking at converting one of my MTB's into a more city bike with a rigid fork and slick tires as I just ride with my son. I was looking on EBAY today and there is such a large selection.

I was able to find some 26" x 1" tires that were only 210g so to save weight on the build and to go fast on the streets these would be ideal. There were some 26" x 1.4" tires that were 300g so heavier and wider which would be nice for roads and maybe some hardpacked trails. After that I might as well stick with my Maxxlite 285 which are light but not great on the road.

I have 26x1.0 Conti. Grand Prix tires. They're fast and very light but fragile and give a harsh ride. I would recommend Ritchey Tom Slicks or something from Schwalbe. Schwalbe have nice tires with a reflective strip built in the sidewall if you commute at night. Any big brand slick tire from 1.4 to 2.0 should be fine.

I think you can get a vittoria randonneur in a 26"--they are heavier though
I like the specialized nimbus--they are very heavy though

I vote for Schwalbe Kojaks. First of all, that's an awesome name. Second of all, they're high-quality, light and very sticky. Plus, Kojaks are available in a variety of widths. I love mine.
