Finally ready to pull the trigger on a semi-aero carbon wheelset. I don't race, but I ride in a weekly club ride that's race pace w/ Cat 1/2 riders. Logging around 200 miles a week. This will be a wheelset for nice days & fast group rides in the Midwest (mainly flats & some rolling hills w/ regular crosswinds). Budget is $1000 and I'd like to be in the 1200 gram range if doable. Weigh about 160lbs so I can use a lower spoke count.
Current Wheelsets:
32H Mavic OP laced to DA 7900 hub rear w/ an old 24H Velomax front wheel
32H Mavic Reflex Tubular laced to WI Hubs (F & R)
32H Mavic CXP33 laced to Campy Veloce (F & R)
I've narrowed it down to the following:
1. Ritchey WCS Apex Carbon 38mm Front/50mm Rear
2. Boyd 38mm Carbon Tubulars
3. Custom Wheelset -Open to suggestions here, I've built plenty of wheels but they've always been with DT & WheelSmith DB spokes in a 3x/2x pattern w/ 32h/28h rims for both MTB & road. If I go custom, I'd like to avoid pillar spokes so I can access the nipples w/ the tires on.
Ideas/Suggestions/Opinions?
