We have welcomed a lot of new members in the last few months. which is great in it's own way, but it always come with influences on the climate of the board. One of the things that seems to be a trend that is 'coming and going' is using the quote button when typing a reply. I have found a good example and while I don't want to ridicule members i think it is good to show it.
It is the following. in this topic AddictR1 asks a question and Prendrefeu replies to him. All perfectly normal I hear you say. correct indeed, but what happens next is the most intriguing part. AddictR1 now quotes Prendrefeu and writes his reply under it.

please use the quote button for the special occasion such as reacting to a post 2 or more posts up on the page. This way the forms are easier to read and take less time for the moderators to clean.

many thanks in advance,

The moderators.

I often use the quote button in an efficient manner, sometimes even for the immediately preceding post, by quoting only the specific item (for instance one or two sentences from a long post) on which I am commenting or replying.

Of all people who could think of that joke i'm very glad it was you. It is good to see some intellect around here.

Sent from my HTC. (where has their sponsorship gone?)

I'm sorry, I can't figure out what the point of the original post was. Are quotes bad? Good? OK, but only under prescribed circumstances? This is unclear.

I use quotes whenever I think it clarifies what I'm responding to. Is that wrong or correct?

Thanks to the moderators for making this a great forum.

I believe that this is essentially it:

• It is good to use quotes intelligently, when necessary.

• If you are writing a reply to the post immediately above yours, it is not necessary to quote the entire text - unless, as HammerTime2 pointed out, you are replying to a very specific portion of the previous post and need to highlight that.

• It is also unnecessary to quote a rather long post in its entirety when the reply is only a few short words.

As cyclists (or people who simply love bikes) and especially those who are on a forum which is at is roots about seeking maximum efficiency, it is very nice to see people using quotes efficiently too.

Another forum I'm on has the quote button disabled for the last message in the thread. Only has a reply button.

Like it.

My head hurts.

Yea way too many quoting going on.
Put a reply button before the quote button and not just at the bottom of the page ?

The reason people are quoting is because more and more of the discussions are getting a bit hot under the collar and the quoting means that regardless of what is edited to the original posting later, they can't undo the part that has then been quoted.

I agree, the quoting is annoying and we shouldn't be getting so up arms here, it's only the internet!

This isn't going to be court room evidence. Who cares if they change it. It is only the internets anyways. If the mods say don't quote the post above yours, then don't do it. Just wait until it becomes 2 posts or higher. We can all wait to post, right?

Perhaps it's time to add to this request to stop the posters who feel the need to double post instead of editing their first post...
