ive got the opportunity to own some c50's but the front rim has crash damage, big crack on the braking surface, so is it possible to get a new rim for these and rebuild? if so where from?

Don't think there is anything about the hub design that means you must use propitiatory shimano spokes, so in theory you could use any rim.

I'm beating once you find a rim through a shimano distributor it will end up costing you as much as the entire wheelset did second hand.

Check with Alex Cycles:

He's in Japan but can ship outside the country. The last time I checked a few years ago Shimano can rebuild these carbon tubulars for around $300-$400 per wheel, which is not so bad. About the same price as getting used stuff on Ebay.

See if you can get a deal on some of the older (2010?) Reynolds rims. They might look similar once you take logos off. Might be able to get a slightly smaller profile rim for the front as well.

Shimano sells the rim only. You can place your order through a dealer/distributor if they are willing to help you out. Just look it up at techdocs.shimano.com and give them the 'Shimano Code No.'
