I took apart a bike and found the Ultegra rear mech upper cog to have lateral play of about 3-5mm. The bike was in quite regular use for a few years. Is that play normal, or should I be looking out to replace parts? Thanks.

Yes this is normal. The pulley is designed to have some lateral movement to negate any small misalignment between the cassette and derailleur. Unless there is damage to the bushing/bearing, or wear to the pulley teeth, you can probably re-use it.

Thanks. Interestingly the Tiso pulleys I have checked against on another, unused RD don't have any play.

that's what makes tiso, and most other aftermarket pulleys, inferior. best upper pulley is dura ace. ball bearings AND floating.

Isn't 3-5mm play a bit excessive? I thought about 1mm was the norm for Shimano?

5mm is way to much... 1mm total is ok.. I say it's new pully time..
I just replaced a set of DA pullys on a friends bike that had that kinda play with some spare ( second hand ) extralite pullys I had... It didn't shift so well before now it's like butter....

im assuming the measurements given are exaggerated. if the play is purely lateral, it's fine. if the play allows the pulley to "roll" (top goes left, bottom goes right), then it needs to be replaced.
