Rush; all that work and you only took into account about 40-45% of the equation! I would suspect the Bikehubstore probably has a better advantage over the Hed when the rim is the leading edge(particularly at yaw) and much less so as a trailing edge as you depict.

Anyways, I don't think Hed themselves think that their profile is particularly aerodynamic. I think they merely mean to say that a 23mm wide rim's walls will better match the 23mm wide tires people run anyways. You must remember when they released the 23mm wide C2 rim something like 4-6 years ago they were just about the first to make a 23mm wide road racing rim. Maybe this just demonstrates they are due for an overhaul.

I thought the whole point of running a 23mm tire on a 23 mm rim was to reduce the 'light bulb' shape and ensure that the sidewalls of the tire transitioned smoothly to the rim.

Re : weight. The HED seems all over the place. Prowheelbuilder.com quotes 430g, wheelbuilder.com quotes 470g (for the clincher).

Hi all,

Quick update: the latest batch of 24h C472s is weighing in between 475-482 grams. Another sampling from about a month ago came in at 471-476. I'm still comfortable calling it the C472w (and I'm kind of stuck with that name), but I will update this on the website.

My BHS rims came in at 476 for the 24 hole rim and 479g for the 20 hole rim ... I have over a 100 miles in 3 days, and I am loving my BHS build :)

It does reduce it... just not very much. On a 19mm wide rim, the 23mm tire sticks out 2mm on each side. On a 23mm rim it sticks out 1 mm. Aero benefits are just one small part of the hype surrounding them...

They look exactly like a Kinlin rim... and Alchemy seemed to confirm that Kinlin has that offering... as I recall. I asked if they were planning on carrying them, and they said they'd like to check some samples first.

Close enough. The Alpha 340 is ~15g over currently... AC420 usually weighed ~470g... etc.

Kinlin is pretty good about consistent weights. A 20g variance isn't bad at all in the aluminum rim business.

Here's my quick review of the BHS rim.

Ordered 21 April, arrived in Australia 30 April.

    24H weighed in at 481g, 28H weighed 474g.
Front laced to BHS 78g wide hub, actual weight 79g.
Rear laced to 28H Powertap SL.
Both using Sapim Race spokes and Brass Nipples.

Differences from previous wheelset (Easton Circuit):

With the same tire (GP4000S), tire measures 1.2mm wider on BHS rim @ 25.1mm @ 90psi.

Shape of tire is now more rounded instead of bulbous. Also took 3 more strokes of the pump to get to 90psi.

I only took it round the block to test the build, so can't comment much, but it feels pretty different from my old wheels, could probably let 5psi out. Feels more confident in the corners.

Have been looking at various 23mm wide rims. The BHS C472w look pretty appealing design wise.

Wow tyres look really fat!
Makes me wonder what a 21 or 20mm tyre would look and ride like on a 21mm rim....
