New 23mm wide aero rim available! $54

Whelps, looks like I am going to have yet another wheelset! Going to be doing a relay across the US this summer and have been thinking about trying out wide rims... and now BHS has them!
Front Hub Rotaz 1 67 67
Spokes Laser 28 4.5 126
Nipples Brass 28 1 28
Rim BHS C472 1 472 472
Rear Hub Rotaz 1 228 228
Spokes Laser 32 4.5 144
Nipples Brass 32 1 32
Rim BHS C472 1 472 472
1569g Total
Not bad at all weight wise... Probably will do 1x front 2x rear. And yes, I am one of those weird people that like building wheels with lasers.

I assume you are talking about the DATI hubs. They only come drilled up to 24/28 and I would like this set of wheels to be 28/32. Aside from that, I currently have 2 sets of wheels built up with the Rotaz hubs and love them quite a bit.
If I ever got a set of lower spoke count rims such as the carbon clinchers on BHS, I would probably get the DATI hubs to try them, but I doubt there is gonig to be much of an improvement over the Rotaz.

It doesn't saw Niobium but the weight seems like it might be, 28mm deep and 23 wide with aero profile 470 grams. Sure that it's the one Boyds uses and many more will over the next few months.
I was just planning on building a set of Heds c2's but this saves lots of cash and more hole drillings available.
This rim is made by Kinlin, this is the new XC279, designed for cyclo-cross.
Anyone see a problem with this build.
NEW: BHS C472w Clincher Rim - 23mm wide - 28mm deep - 472g = 944g
UltraLight Front Road Hub - 66 grams 24 radial laced.
SuperLight Rear Hub - 211 grams 28
Sapim CX-Ray - Black 4.5g = 234
Sapim 14mm Aluminum Alloy Poly-Ax Nipples -14G - Black = 18.2
Total weight = 1474g total weight.
Match this up with some Latex tubes and some 23mm wide Conti 4000S tires should be a great rolling and low rolling resistance set up.

Depending on weight and the hub flange spacing, the rear might not be all that stiff unless you use a triplet or half radial pattern in my experience. 2x with CX-Rays has never been that great of a rear wheel setup for me.

Use Sapim Race (or DT Aero Comps if ya gotta have bladed) for the rear drive side and the wheel will be a fair bit stiffer. Probably adds 1.5g/spoke * 14 spokes = ~20-25g.

Oh yeah? Well, check this out. This relatively small company, H Plus Son, makes an affordable wide road rim called the Archetype. And the weight is decent for you weight weenies.

I'm a bit new to road biking. Can someone briefly explain the virtues of a wide rim? These seem really wide to me. Is it just added stiffness that you're after?
no they allow a wider contact patch with normal 23mm tyres, which reduces rolling resistance. They also allow a larger airvolume so you can reduce pressure in the tyres and increase comfort. They are also meant to be more aero because the transition from rim to tyre is smoother.

No it isn't. The generic BHS rim that the original poster linked to is 372g. And the H Plus Son Archetype rim is lighter, 350g.
