Blood liver values - concering exercise

A light bike doesn't replace good fitness.

I had a major blood screening conducted before a consultation with a specialist due to a long lasting injury to my hand after a crash.

On the test it turned out a liver value in my blood was at 79 - while the reference value is max 75. The doctor wanted me to do another test the day after, and this one yielded an 85. The doctor was uncertain as to what could be the cause of this - as I am a non smoker, non drinker (well, a half a litre of beer every second week or so) and wants to monitor this value with further tests in the coming months.

Her only theory was that exercise could be the root of the elevated values. Does anyone have any experience in this regard?

My past three weeks have been the most intense as regards training ever, with 24, 28 and 18 hours of training, containing quite a few hard intervals.

Do you know which value was elevated? That could give a better idea for possible causes.

blood test values might be due to the exercise intensity, corresponding food intake, if you'd become a bit dehydrated, or just genetics

i'm high/low on a few, always have been, probably always will be

Almost all enduarance athletes will test much higher for their AST, ALT levels during hard periods of training or racing relative to THEIR baseline levels, mine are always elevated unless I completely stop training for a couple weeks.
I had a routine blood test done the day after a 140km handicap race and I knew the doc was going to freakout even before I had the blood drawn, sure enough 250% higher than the high upper limit.
Reason being muscle breakdown from exercise also increases these levels so bodybuilders, runners, cyclists, tri's etc also can have elevated AST, ALT levels.

Google marathon runners and AST, ALT levels, some have given reading so high they have resembled that of a serious car accident victom or some other major trauma that has injured alot of muscle and organ tissue.

If there was something really bad going on with your liver it wouldn't be just these 2 test that were elevated and your doc should be aware of this and needs to be up to date with your current training scheduele.
Sadly all GP's I've visited have not understood this until they have done some research at my request/s usually you have to tell them more than once

AST is more likely to be raised than ALT. ALT is fairly specific to liver cell damage but AST leaks out of liver and muscle cells. You'd expect it to be raised after damage to muscle cells as well as liver cells. Heart attack and strenuous exercise will do this. It's very non-specific though so isn't viewed in isolation.

It's my ALT that first tested at 79, then after a day's rest it increased to 85.
