im not sure it's a bearing. it looks like one, but a bearing pivot there does not make sense. a pivot axle surrounded by an elastomer, like a car engine mount, makes sense to me.

Releasing a "cobbled classic" frame is hardly exciting news since not too many people need a "cobbled classic" frame.

Country roads around the Midwest make me feel like I'm on Belgian cobbles
Last year the city streets required a 5inch travel bike if you did not want to pee blood. This bike would of been handy. Luckily they fixed them for the SB.
Pretty cool idea. Real nice integration into the frame. At least it does not look like a Thudbuster.

As long as the move can add to the brand image (sorta similar concept to the non-STI left lever on the OCLV5900 back in 2000), this could end up helping them sell more Madones. It's not like Trek would blink at the cost of a few more molds.

Have there been any claimed weights for the frame and/or frame+fork?
The built-in and subtle fender mounts could also make this into a surprisingly nimble commuter build.

100 grams heavier than the Madone frame. IIRC 1050gr.
