Very interesting, thanks Tape. Definitely got to play with accelerations later this season (when my shape is better).

As regards specificity and the "no grabbing" rule -- what's your take on it for maximal efforts? Working the handle bars should give more max power, which seems to be in line with what the article is saying?

For true maximal efforts you have to grip the handlebar, especially the "standing start" efforts.

For the efforts Dr Coggan is explaining they are submaximal and to utilize the lower body as much as possible brings in the "no gripping".

Also to clarify, you aren't "working the bars" - the upper body is just to act against the forces of the lower body - the less movement the better.
