I have only seen these rims

http://www.light-bicycle.com/carbon-mountain-bike-29er-rim-clincher.html

However, the only info I saw about them was a guy in mtbr who bought and was having a set built. I believe one cracked while it was being built.

I think those are the same rims being discussed. Same dimensions at least, with the 22mm inner width, weight, and looks.

I simply cannot see how a rim with no channel (or is it all-channel?) can be a tubeless-compatible rim! There is simply no ledge for the tire-bead to sit on.

I think that looks fine to be run tubeless because the bed of the rim is flat where it joins to the sidewall and relatively short. I think the real problem in this case is mounting/seating the tyres without a channel.

Sometimes I think that rim beds which are a 'blank canvas' as such can be a good thing to set up because they let the user completely dictate the shape with the use of tapes/strips/foam etc rather than a metal rim bed that doesn't leave you much room to modify to suit your rim/tyre combo if the standard shape doesn't work too well.

I'm with ya, but it's possible.

It was a pain in the ass to convert my original Edge XC 29 rim to tubeless. I had to build-up (fill-in) the rim cavity with foam to make the beat seat tall enough for a tight fit and just hope that the air pressure keeps it there. I've only had it burp once though, when I slowed for a drop that led into a right turn, but panicked and went straight off the jump and had the front tire hit pretty hard on landing past the trail's edge (basically a drop to uphill, since the trail was sloped like a giant berm).

Definitely not what I would technically call tubeless compatible.

I actually don't even feel like running those rims over my i9 enduro 29 wheelset, since the i9 feels stiffer (more feedback), has better tubeless, and has wider rims that feel more stable. It gives more more confidence to ride relatively recklessly, where I rely on instinct and reflexes to negotiate terrain, as opposed to scanning, planning, and repetition.

The wheels have been ridden by a 90kg rider 3 times a week with no faults so far. He has been pleased with the performance and noted the increased stiffness. The Maxxis Crossmark was tricky to mount tubeless but the Schwalbe tyres we tried mounted with a compressor easily.

StradaJon, what's the kind of tension you've used for the rear wheel (DS/NDS)? I've been talking to some Chinese supplies but most give reasonably insane max/recommended spoke tensions (180kgf - 250kgf).

I made my decision this week and ordered a pair of Enve 29 rims and Tufo tubulars, hope they are worth the money :-)

We've had a few pairs go through the workshop now and I'm really happy. The profile is like a Roval, good quality finish and they track very well in the corners as my wheelbuilder has been racing a new demo pair this year reports. We had the construction / finish spec tweaked to meet our requirements which makes it easier to build them up in our opinion.
