I am building a 29er with a rigid fork...In your opinion what are the best grips to use for better shock absorption...Ritchey Foam? Esi Grips? others?

ESI. Really noticeable damping of buzz and improved control when ploughing through extended sections of rough stuff.

I was running the ESI chunky grips, but have switched to the Specialized foams, I find them more cmfortable, and 1/4 the weight of ESI. mine came in at 16g for the pair. plus they are $10 msrp...

Surprised at the opinion that foams are better than ESIs. I have used foams before and on my new bike was going to use ESIs but I'd be interested to hear how many more people like foams better?

Oury, non-lock on variety

Ergon gx2. Especially if your going single speed.

Good choice. I use the same grips, but in the lock-on variety. The padding on 'em is pretty good, and I was using 'em on my rigid 29er for a while.

Actually, the GS1 / GS2 (without bar end / with bar end) are the GX1 / GX2 replacement - they are even better. Marathon World Championship winning.

I think that if it got at all wet where you are, the esi's would be a better option than the spesh foams. I used to run Oury's and also ran the ODI Rogue, but I find the ESI chunky to be great, however mine have stiffened up in consistent 115 degree heat over the summer here... the spesh grips will unlikely last as long, but they are light and cool for the moment...

ESI 's make a big difference, also think about your gloves.

Just got the esi chunky on my new bike one ride in and I love them! You could go extra lite. They are really nice they are not super durable though.

Foam is great, as long as it's not too thin. There are some very thin ones around, which weigh almost nothing, and seem great, until you're going down a steep rockgarden - then it's very scary. Go for the ergonomically shaped ones.
