I've read some bad reviews of these pedals (don't think WTB even still make them) but are they really that bad?
I can get them cheap but don't want to waste my money if they're rubbish!!!

Polaris, i don't have any experience with wtb pedals. Only shim and time. Nowadays i only ride time. I only can say, Go for some nice Time's

Time really work great. i ride with them for two months. Good climb and descend. Unfortunetly ,i change to egg-beaters coz of weight. 
Power transfer always come from foot not platform. platform are for freeriders where they drop 30foot with no pain.
