I'll stand corrected, but that's how I saw it unfold.
You are kind of right how it went but it was later in the race. This is a quick overview of what happened (obviously excluding sh*tload of attacks that didn't really eventuate to anything and lots of gutter action splintering field) from how I saw it (rough km estimates):
60km - initial break goes on KOM with about 8-10 from what I believe
90km - chase of 4 goes after break, which I was in
170km - chase brought back
195km - break bought back on first climb out of Camperdown -
198km - break of 3 goes clear over final KOM and other than that, final selection of approximately 30 guys remain in contention as the main front group.
220km - chase of 6 breaks away
230km - I begin attempt to bridge across to chase
240km - I joined chase coming through final feed zone to make final chase of 7
262km - race over, 3 stay away, 7 chasers at 3 minutes.
Regardless of what happened, tough tough day in the saddle!
Did you pull out due to hunger flat or just couldn't mentally face another 60km into that wind with only a few more riders still behind you? I nearly cracked a couple of times and pulled the pin but just kept plugging away and know exactly how it feels.
