I'm looking to build a new wheel set based on the Enve Smart 6.7 rims. Purpose for the wheels is mainly tri's and similar fast flat courses. I'm not very heavy - 70-72kg and want the fastest wheels possible. Initially considered Alchemy ELF and ORC with ceramic upgrades but have seen the new Tune 170. The Tune 170 seems to have eliminated any problems with the old 180 and has good specs plus is 50 grams lighter. I know that with hubs weight will not gain me speed but given that I don't need all the top end specifications/engineering of the ORC how will the Tune 170 compare? I'd also want to put ceramics in the Tune 170 if this was an option.

I like the geometry and weight of the new 170 hub and will definitely be taking them into consideration for my next set of wheels which I'll build this winter, but the larger bearings and bearing placement of the alchemy hubs still puts them tops for performance imo.

It does look sweet. Wonder how much it costs? 172g...that's light as all get out given a 17mm axle. Sure would like to have a set to play with.

Imagine lacing them up to a rear Niobium VSR and the front to a Stan 340 :)

Would certainly be some sweet porn to look at.

I am definitely a skeptic of the Tune hubs nowadays. We had an overwhelming amount of them come back with creaking problems which lead to our decision to drop them entirely. The durability of the ORC is quite exceptional and from what I have seen the amount of service that they need is minimal. I would definitely advise the Alchemys, particularly on such a deep wheelset.

There's no doubt that the Alchemy hubs are very nice, but in many cases they are overkill.

I've had the new Mig70 and Mag170 for a while now and am extremely impressed with them.

The average weight we've seen from two batches so far is 168 grams for the rear.

Almost every piece of the 170 has changed from the 180 not just the larger axle. It's also easier to service and doesn't need special tools anymore to do it. Better tension ratio and no creaking issues.

Overall I think this is one of the best hubs out there unless you are a bigger rider.

I'm riding AC 205 hubs with a 17mm axle with no issues as of today.

I'd think that the 17mm axle would be plenty strong for anyone up to 110kgs. Guess it would be a matter of the bearings having the load capacity?

I had two sets of Tune hubs. I thought both pairs were under par in terms of quality. I don't know much about the Alchemy hubs but have heard good things from the wheel builders I know.

Wonder if a Tune Mag 170 laced 36 4x to a Stan's 340 would be strong enough for a 110kg rider?

Makes my mouth water just thinking about it.

what is the actual DS flange to center spacing of MAG 170?

the fairwheel and tune page show it is 20.3mm,

http://fairwheelbikes.com/tune-mag-170- ... -4278.html
http://www.tune.de/index.php?option=com ... 57&lang=de

but Roues Artsanales said that MAG 170's DS flange spacing remain the same as MAG 180 (17mm). In the comparsion picture, the position of DS flange of MAG170 and MAG180 looks the same.

I think that the Alchemys may be a bit better particularly on a softer rim like the 340. Lateral rigidity is absolutely key on that type of hoop and the wider flange spacing of the ELF/ORC will help to maximize that particular aspect of the wheelbuild.

Wow...they have a bicycle shop in Bozeman? Bet winters are tougher than they are here.

It's hard to beat the quality of the Alchemy Hubs plus their customer service is excellent - I really like mine and will probably use them for my next build - I also had a bad experience with Tune Hubs... so my vote would be Alchemy

The winters can be a bit brutal. Thankfully we do most of our business online which really helps to keep the wheels going out the door. However I have seen a few lone soldiers out in the -30 pluggin' away on the bike. Now that's what I call dedication!

Funny... I think you've mentioned 36 hole 340's several times but well, they don't exist
