Aerospoke wheels, Why so out of favour?

I tried a friends new bike with an aerospoke front wheel on it yesterday. No, not the lightest wheel on earth, was about 1300 grams he said, but weight aside, is there a reason why they're not used more? They seem an ideal training wheel, from everything I find they're indestructable, and not horrific looking.
Am I missing something here? or is it the weight alone which keeps everyone away?
I did look through the forums. Saw a lot of heresay, and very little real opinion on them.

2x the weight of an average spoked wheel is the main drawback.
you see them on the track and on some tri bikes, but doubling the weight of your front wheel on a road bike is certainly not favoured around here, not to mention the effect it has on handling

Aerospoke was also tested and has some of the worst lateral stiffness of any wheel.

Yes, hipsters.
Also: the company was about to close its doors a few years ago just as the "fixie" crowd started to grow. Aerospokes became popular (especially just as a front wheel), company not only came back into business but also expanded.

I tell my friends that they aren't actually aero, that they are a boatanchor of a wheel, but the only response they can sum up is, they look sick when I'm doing skids though...
