I find an energy drink that also replaces lost salt and mineral levels helps more than just the suger based energy drinks.

I think the term is electrolites (the bodies natural minerals).

How do people avoid bonking?

I regularly bonk on the way home after racing.

Bruiser, after your race eat a low GI (Glycimic Index) snack. If you have high GI foods/ drinks then this will lead to Insulin spiking, the effects of this spike is to scavange the rest of the sugar from the blood and try and get your liver to convert it to fat (blame evolution). This spike also promotes muscle regrowth when protien is consumed (Insulin injection is why many body builders are now Diabetic).

Frankie-B, the absorption rate is maximised by having the salt concentration at the same as the body, with a slightly higher sugar concentration. This creates a positive osmodic pressure (the desire for all fluids to have a 0% concentration gradient) once the stomach has removed the sugars and salts the body craves. This then "pulls" the water along with the "extras" into the blood stream.

I bonk regularly on the way home from racing but find a mars bar will get me home.

Aust's use the term bonking colloquially as well.

Actually any food is good at that stage.

What do ppl eat pre race and how early?

I personally eat some light sandwiches two hours before the start. 40 min. before the start i drink a sportsdrink to give my body some extra sugar. This will be stored. and during the race i also drink a bottle of sportsdrink.

Raw Glucose was designated as 100 (was thought that this would be the top).

Some fruits are quite low Apple 38, Prunes 15 but others are middling Banana 58.

The absolute no.1 thing to drink after a race, is beer(if you can be a passenger in the car back home). Try it, it`s excellent. The beer relaxes your body/mind, reduces the cortisol levels, gives a fair amount of energy.
Have you ever yelled at someone just after finishing a race? With the low blood sugar levels, bicyclists tend to explode over details after a race..One beer, and nothing can irritate you anymore..
