Evening.

I have been starting to make progress on a new build, over the last few days.
To put it simply, I am aiming to build a sub 10lbs road bike. Which has been inspired by the Gunter Mai 7lbs build. I'm not claiming I will get anywhere close to his amazing effort. But i am trying to customise as many pieces as possible myself, even if its only to save a few grams, and a few pounds(£).

Anyway, I was asked by a few friends and colleagues to do a blog about the parts I have tuned, and the parts I decide to use. So I thought I would pop it on here, so you can have a look.
Feel free to criticize anything you want. It is after all an experiment, so comments are always good.

While I'm here, I was wondering if anybody knows anywhere that do tuning kits for Sram Red rear mechs? I have found a few, but there all eBay. Any help would be good.

Thanks
Josh..

www.carbonschmiede.de would be the best company for that

As you can probably tell, this build is taking me a long time..
But I am making some progress, so I thought I would share what I have done so far.

The Sram red rear mech, has a advertised weight of 156grams. This is fairly heavy with easy room for saving weight.
I managed to pick up one on Ebay, with some cosmetic damage, so the dremel same out.

I spent a few hours, looking at the movement of the mech, and mapping out where safe places where to make 'holes' and shave off material.
I did purchase a tuning kit from XXLightBikes, which enabled me to shave 18grams off straight away. But more was wanted..
I was very happy with the end result, obviously time will tell, and show if i have done any 'damage' but for now, target achieved.

Final weight for the mech is 117.9grams, and below there are the pictures of the final design.

Also, new in this week.

I have decided to play about with the brake and gear housing. Trying different items to see what works..
Thanks to Mike on here, this first thing I am going to try is this plastic housing.

As you can see from the picture below 3meters weighs in at 25.9 grams.
And for comparison, the bottom picture shows 165cm of SRAM gore gear cable weighing in at 51.9 grams.
This is a good weight saving, but only time will tell if the shifting is any good or not..

Do you think that's really accurate on the weighing of the cables?

Pharm..

You are right, the way they are weighed in the pictures might not be the best way.
But, I did weigh them by getting the cables tightly wound up, so they sat on the centre of the scale, and they came out at exactly the same weight, the pictures just looked a mess.

I am waiting for a set of bigger scales, but for now, those pictures are purely just to show what the weights are. And as far as I know they are correct.

Cheers,
Josh..

looking good so far.....the best use of the cables i say would be for brakes (like I described to you before). i think shifting will not work properly, though I have never tried shifting with those cables....

Ok, a bit more of an update for you..

Had a very exciting delivery this morning. Starting to get the project going abit fast now. Things seem to be clicking into place.
I have got the SRAM red rear mech down to 116.2g (will get some pictures later).

But - The exciting bit -

The derailleur and hubs are impressive, but what frame are you going to use?
