Bowties and Bolts for Speedplay Zero
Moderator: robbosmans
Speedplay pedals were originally an all aluminum body. I had some. But they went to "bowtie" inserts of steel because the aluminum wore pretty rapidly.
I would stay away from aluminum. Titanium might be OK for a while, but I suspect that the hardened steel is going to be the best, for only a small penalty in weight.
Ti is good for sttrength-to-weight, but steel will still have a harder, longer-wearing serface.

Steel spindles are available in several lengths. Ti defaults to shorter than the steel. I ride both and don't notice the difference.
Al bow-ties by Cadence are great. Sure, a bit of wear, but it's my race bike, which I don't ride every day. If they wear, I'll replace them. No big deal -- relatively cheap.
A fantastic upgrade: most of the bang of the Nanograms for a small fraction of the buck.

anyone know why the Ti ones are slightly shorter?
does this effect Q factor ( i.e. will it feel different to cro-mo / stainless stock ones?? )

My Al bow-ties are finally giving up the ghost on my left pedal (the one I clip into and out of most often). I'm not sure about mileage: I usually ride my Ritchey Breakaway to keep the Fuji from daily wear.
I'm checking to see if I can get a replacement set... Bryne & co clearly don't smile on this sort of thing.

I went down this route of replacing Bowties and bolts, the bowties are no longer advertised on the website btw. But I went with the ti ones instead of the aluminium purely for the fact they will last longer. All good so far after a few months of use.
But one pedal is really hard to get into now, I have to force it quite a bit. I hadn't changed cleat tension from what it was previously so it was def. the new bowtie that made it harder to clip in. Almost to the point where I have ridden for 9km with only one foot in - thankfully it was a flat ride before I could finally get my foot in after much swearing and nashing of teeth

Sorry I should have said - Toronto Cycles - they had alu and ti ones when I enquired last year - I also got Ward spindles though so they are extra blingy - and light.
