1x9 or 1x10 Set Up Question...

Is some sort of chain device needed on the front to keep the chain on or will the tension of the rear derailleur be enough?
I see heaps of devices around then the other day I saw a guy racing a 1 x 9 with no device on the front at all that I could see!
Any experiences would be helpful.

As for the chain guide, I use http://www.gvtc.com/~ngear/whatis.html This thing works great. It weighs less than 20g with a Ti bolt, and is infinitely adjustable. I also use a Salsa bash guard on the outer ring position, it protects the ring, and prevents the chain from coming off the outside. You need the chain guide. I don't care how tight your chain is, even using a short cage XO with a SUPER tight DH spring from Sram it came off a few times without it.

There's got to be a lighter option that the 20g inner guard + a bash guard! I can put a Campy derailluer on there at 70odd grams.

The MRP guide is good, but it's ugly IMO, and doesn't work with BB30 (which all of my bikes are)

Thanks for the tips guys. I'll go for he MRP option for now. It aint pretty, but it's nice and light. Looks like it could be lightened some more too!!

Bromton cycles have a 10t screw on sprocket in stock, £20. My brain is turning over here, old 7 speed cassette body, 9 speed block (11-34) without 11t, use the lockring as the 10.......32t up front, sorted. Winter project for me.

Can't wait for the details! I'm getting more and more interested into this 1x9 thing. No fd, cables, shifters, big ring. Lots of weight to be saved!
