My new "mongrels"

Just got my new wheels, I like to call them the "mongrels," thanks for the name danielgillett.

They are sweet, front is a nimble spider rim laced to a american classic 58 hub and spokes are AE ovalized Wheelsmiths.

Weight 573g

Rear is a Velocity Aerohead OCR laced to a DT Swiss 240 hub and 28 XE Wheelsmith bladed spokes.

Weight 760g

Total set weight of 1333g

They are supposed to be really stiff and light, I'll know soon enough. Much better relability due to the DT rear hub, and is only 10g heavier then the new AM 205!

Also, for those interested in the nimble spider rim, it looks to be top notch. Only thing that I don't like about it is the narrow brake track, similar in size to the AM rims, but it is very nicely machined.

It is strong enough, but given the fact that the Velocity Aerohead is 4g heavier and one third the price AND will give an even more laterally stiff wheel, why not?

Was there any reason as to why you chose the Spider over the Fly? Wasn't your intention to create a climbing wheelset?

I get it, it does fit as a name with my build, plus it sounds cool.

Spider is a clincher, fly is carbon tubular.

The hidden nipple model weighs more, costs more, and is not friendly to truing.

i am always between 165 - 175lbs i wonder how they would fair on everyday use with me. please give us an update when you have racked up some miles. i would still have gone for the hidden nipple. how much more do they weigh?

The whole point of this build was to make a very light set while being very robust. I think with a heavier spoke guage and 28/32 count a 200lb person could ride them with no problems.

I'm not the man on wheels, call up Mike at oddandendos if you have questions like that. He won't sell you wheels that he knows won't be strong enough for the rider.

SL, I'm 175-180 (still trying for 160) but I'm very tough on wheels no matter what the weight. I think it's the bmx/mountain biker in me.

dang forget the wheels superlite has the new dura-ace invisachain and rear derailuer. that is a pretty sweet setup. I bet with that chain on there your cranks spin very "freely"! Nice wheels though.
