Cool, PM coming your way.

fletch62: If you want, I have some carbon seatpost offcut that would probably suit a DIY job like that. PM me if you're interested, it's you'rs for the cost of postage.

One that i have been looking at and trying to source is this:
The carbon cradle extends along the saddle rails and the top clamps are in line with the ends of the cradle so no extra pressure points.

Some data from my Thomson Masterpiece:

clamp diameter: 31.8 mm
original length: 350 mm (stated)
original mass: 190.3 grams
cut-section (3.9 cm): 9.7 grams = 2.5 grams / cm
final mass: 180.4 grams
sawdust: 0.2 grams (calculated)

clamps (2): 48.1 grams
cylinders (2): 9.4 grams
bolts and washers (2): 11.7 grams
cut post: 111.2 grams (cut)
uncut post (calculated): 121.1 grams

The clamp is an obvious source of weight savings. Not much in the bolts (8.3 grams here, saving 3.4 grams). Cutting is an obvious no-brainer.... cost me $5 at the local shop, around $0.5/gram.

me: So what do you think of these clamps?
girlfriend: You're asking hypothetically, right?
me: (pause) No. They save 30 grams!
girlfriend: You can't be serious. I would be very upset if you got those. They're totally untested.
me: Yeah... well.... if they failed, they probably wouldn't do so catastophically....

Anyway, it looks like I'm out :).

You paid $5 for someone to cut your seat post?!? Do you have no hands or something?

No hacksaw :). I had a Skil Saw, but that was making a mess of it.

Hey, at least I repair my own flats :).
