heavy bike

recently set up a KHS full-susser. turned out to be heavier than expected (26lbs). racing with a bike this heavy is a killer. need to knock 3lbs off. any ideas?

What's the current set-up like?

First place to look could be the tires & tubes - replace fat meaty heavy (maybe even UST) tires with narrower lighter ones and run tubeless with liquid latex (Stans / Eclipse / home made) to avoid pinch flats and give better grip despite running less knobly tires...

This set up is 26lbs? WOW

The frame must be a big part of this weight, as this is a pretty light set up.

Titec porkrinds grips save 50g approx, tubeless (stans etc) will help too. Can you live with a 12-27T cassette, if so drop the long cage rear for more gram savings.[/b]

Brakes: Ritchey Linear Logic Pro: -50g and pretty cheap.

Use a SRAM cassette. They are really good. best one as of 2003 models was only about $50 US

well yeah... the frame weighs aabout 6.3lbs.
the rear shock comes with remote lockout.
advisable to change AVA to a normal float R?

That's expensive, but why don't you go for a DT SSD 210L? Lighter and better, best "air"-shock at the moment.

Make sure you check with DT first for compatibility with your frame. It may fit the frame, but if the KHS design relies on the shock as a structural unit, then it's no good, because the eyelets on the DT "float" and thus they are no good for frames that would be flimsy without a shock in them.

That's no problem at all. It works fine in any frame.

It FITS in any frame it doesnt WORK in any frame. If the frame is not laterally stiff enough, and the shock acts as a part of the frame's structural integrity, then the frame with the DT shock installed will be FLIMSY and may actually have issues with breaking of the frame

Never heard of such problems. The DT is constructed to reduce lateral forces. If the frame brakes with an DT, every other shock without ball joints would break before. There are several other shocks which come with standard ball joints to ensure torque-free mounting in the frame as the DT.
