I think OYL is suggesting the wheels are overpriced, and with a simple weight to price comparison you can see why. Their definetly the heaviest wheelset in that price range.
That said I'm deciding between Cosmics and Lightweights for twice the price.

Answers to some questions:
Contrast to the SSC SL's : I ride the mavics during the week - I always use the 420's on the weekend for the group rides and when I pull out my hood they feel so much faster " not as steady " but I always notice the little extra zipp they give.
I have 2 pair of these Black/18/24/shimano/sapim spoke and the Silver/18/24/DT double Butt Campa both feel almost the same - Sapims are a little stiffer - I think they are built at a higher tension.
The new Hubs are a Huge improvement - the front does not have the "plugs" that pull out it has screw in axels - this I believe makes the front wheel stiffer then the older style that used to always feel like it moved side to side under load.
Braking surface if small but sufficient, If you damage the wheels AM replace at a very reasonable price.
You can use regular spokes should you break one - I have not yet.
In contrast to the Mavic these are lighter cost half as much and very easy to maintain - Carbones are great "specially the 2005" but if I was parting with that money I want something all carbon and much lighter.

Do you have the same tires @ the same psi on all of those wheelsets? Seems like otherwise it wouldn't be an accurate comparison.

You are correct - tires/tubes change the feel of the wheels.
I have Tufo Elite Road on one pair of 420 Vittoria CX on the other and Hutchinson Pro Team tires on the mavics, explains some of the difference but I have used other tires on all these rims " I always test the tires in my store" and the 420's come out tops.

How do they compare stiffness wise?
I've got no doubt that the 420's are faster as they are more aero and lighter, but SL is seeking stiff wheels.

I'm attempting to say, in a light-hearted way, that I've never been overly fond of Mavic wheelsets, at least the few that I've ridden/owned. The hubs are nice and smooth though.
If I had to pick one "brand" of factory wheelsets out of the many on the market today it would easily be Campy.
My #2 would probably be...well, I don't know.
But if the Mavic's work for you, that's fine.
