BTP bottle cage - reliable for racing?

Hey Gearjunkie, don't give up the BTPs just yet. Sometime the clear on the inside surface of the cages can be slippery. Try taking some 200 grit sandpaper and roughing the surface and try the BTPs again, it wouldn't hurt to try. And maybe lightly sand the water bottle too. Wouldn't hurt also.

Thanks for the info. I'm really surprised and would not have guessed that design would have problems. The conical versions hold bottles so (too) tight.

I second the option of sanding the inside of the cages. I did this to mine and have been racing them now for 2 seasons and have yet to have any serious problems.

i would leave the BTP ones alone and sell them as new and buy some King ti cages--that will solve your problem.

@ Wrestlr: Thanks for the back up info. Did you have any problems before sanding? Also any serious bumps / grids / rail crossings on your rides?

@ Goldy: Appreciate the sentiment (I dig the minimal but functional thing and ti) but not sure would suit the rest of my bike. Thanks though!
