Do my eyes deceive me or are those old square taper cranks?

Yes... and taking the bad water resistance of the UT bearings in mind, I'd say it's a good choice for training. Looking at the picture, you can see it's a complete Record 06 group, so Evans' last years bike. Cadel rode a Helium instead of a Noah this year.
PowerTap is a Predictor-Lotto 2007 sponsor.
Love his Aussi Gaerne shoes btw
@ Guslo: is it that warm in your neighbourhood now? Pros rarely go training with short sleeves and bibshorts!

I don't see the powertap or wiring harness in the picture... where are you looking?
To me that is a PowerTap hub on the picture, as well as the computer mount (without the Cervo here) on the stem is for PowerTap. Wires? PowerTap exists in wireless version!

Didn't he use a Noah too on Tour de France this year?

The photo was taken in july, 2007 after he came back from the tour..Cadel (as many others riders of PredLotto) rides also with the noah, but in the tour he has used (or he should have used) only the helium..I'm not sure but it seems that in the first stages he rode a noah.
If I had the chance to meet him again I will ask.
ciao!

the blue bar tape goes really well with his erm......................nothing!
The right to bear arms is slightly less ludicrous than the right to arm bears. (Chris Addison)

When you ride 150km+ a day I don't think you care if your bar tape matches your shoes.
Just goes to show with the BB choice and wheels that the pros will ride on the more durable stuff when they get to choose. The box rims are likely more forgiving.
I ride out around where Cadel lives in the off season and I often get a sore back and numb feet, but don't on other rides of similar distance.
I've heard some amazing stories of Cadel riding with some of the bunch rides too. Like doing the 80km bunch ride, then continuing on to do another 100km by himself. Also heard he will ride up some of the hills in a 53-13 in the saddle on hills most people need to be down low in a 39 ring.
I'd love to bump into him one day, or watch him as he goes buzzing past....going for a ride down his way in 2 weeks as a last long ride before around the bay in a day

Maybe he's just saying (to himself) "O.k. jerk, are you done yet?

Not sure why you assume he chose those - chances are that's just what the team gave him.
As for his expression, I think that passes for his smile. Take a look at shots of the poor geezer on a bike- when the pressure's on he always looks like he's having a difficult b.m.
