WW was never intended to be a general cycling forum.

at the risk of incurring the wrath of th moderators there does appear to be an element of double standards applied, i.e we're allowed multiple pages on doping and Saul Raisin's recovery yet not about Ryan Cox...

Hey ho, c'est la vie I s'pose...

Either this 'spirit' needs to be 'enforced' across every topic or some kind of discretion needs to be used.

Action pictures, shoe recommendations, new helmet pictures, pro-tour sponsorship news, pictures of a saddle, details of races, help installing a gear indicator etc, etc are also not strictly in the spirit yet are allowed to permeate the board.

This forum has changed from being a pretty cool global community to being over policed and full of sniping and agro - not the way to go.

I don't think it ever really changed.

Since it started and Florian would never allow a single off topic post there has been requests for an off topic section, or for the forum to be opened up. At various times due to very low moderator/member numbers there has been more off topic posting on here due to the lack of it being caught rather than a change in Florian's wishes.

The main difference in allowing a thread about Big Fellow's death than Ryan Cox's is that Big Fellow was a WW, and the thread was less about the death of a cyclist, but the death of a very respected member of the board.

The extra moderation has resulted in some sniping BW, but when the forum was under Florian's tighter control there was none because any OT posting was not allowed and people who didn't like it left and didn't spend their whole time saying they would and whinge about it and staying. The extra moderation was a result of the sniping, rather than the other way around.

Ok ignoring the first part of my deleted post, which I shall reproduce below as it may be more appropriate here and others can judge its "sniping" intent.

I shall rephrase the question.

Where do weenies go for non weenie chat? Give people a forum to do it in or a sticky with some links to popular elsewhere forums. Go on give us a clue.

Original Post deleted by unknown moderator from Road forum.

Ok so this is a forum about light bikes and light parts and sometimes lightweights!

I understand locking off topic threads but feel locking the Ryan Cox thread was somewhat shortsighted and meanspirited. You can't pause to mark a mans life for fear of ..... what? bandwidth creep , that the place will degenerate into a cesspit of dope riddled recumbent riding porn fiends (i am halfway there myself). How far could that thread have gone?

Anyway 2 questions before lockdown.

How about an off topic forum? Dopers politics gossip and death? Reasons why not?

And if No where do you frequent for things unweenie! Anywhere good debate flourishs and conversation freewheels?

Can you explain why the posts mentioned are allowed yet any posts that mention Ryan Cox are removed?

BMC pulling out of sponsorship has what to do with WW???? I won't mention the other 10+ threads currently there that seem to be OK. It's a pretty sad reflection on this board that any mention about the death of a fellow cyclist is banned but discussions about shoes is OK.

With the entire sentence I assume

The fact that he died from a cycling related problem that may well affect people here is I suppose lost on those more concerned with interpreting the rules as they wish??

Why?

WW is a technical forum and its owner wants it to stay that way.

The board was not intended for general chat about cyclists and cycling, but to ONLY be about light bikes and bike parts.

If you where smart enough to find WW I'm sure you are smart enough to find a general forum as well - there is no shortage of them.

nikh was the 1st person Florian asked to help moderate the board. He is not interpreting the rules as he wishes, he is helping Florian look after the rules Florian created. That a bunch of new forum members can't seem to determine the difference between general cycling discussion and technical discussion is not a problem of the forum's.

Come on Cyclo loosen up and re-read your signature.

I come here for the tech. Thankyou for answering the first part of my question however questioning my intelligence is a copout.

A sticky pointing to other similar forums may just save your locking/delete finger from arthritis.

The reason I ask the question is I am interested in offtopic discussions and enjoy the weight weenie sensibility, therefore it makes sense to head somewhere where a) weight weenies go and b) the sense of community is the same. It is called peer referral and is the most effective way of spreading information to the right people. A recommendation is what was asked for not f%*# off and find it yourself.
But as to the fable that there are Antipodes, that is to say, men on the opposite side of the earth, where the sun rises when it sets to us, men who walk with their feet opposite ours, that is on no ground credible.

This question has been put to Florian 100s of times since WW started - and he has consistently said he doesn't want it.

I was not out to question your intelligence, but more asking why should WW provide that for you? It is not the intention of the board to have ANYTHING to do with general discussion.

Because ......

It dosn't cost anything!

It would provide a benifit to all the members and the board resulting in less off topic talk, less moderation work for the moderators and less aggression.

It would create goodwill! The forum is paid for by a online shop. A happy forum member is a happy potential customer whereas a non forum member is .....

It would foster a sense of community. A online community is about sharing common interests and ideas freely.

One last question

If I post a thread titled

Where do Weight Weenies go for general cycling discussion?

in the Weight Weenies forum (not the road forum) would it get deleted or locked and if so why?

hence the question....

Please see this thread and who posted, a little ironic I think.

I think lightbikefatrider has a valid point here with the final post in the thread.........
