Carving in a XTR M95x cranks?

In the same moment I drilled inspection holes in the backside I saw the back section is thick, very thick but I milled away some material to see how it´s inside these cranks.

In this version I will NOT use them on road, too dangerous for 20 gr reduction.

I´ve already ordered new left hand crank.

So be calm guys, Weightweenies don´t need people who only critics people.

I will instead shave off all sharp edges utside and see where the weight lands.

Money is no problem here.

and if you are so brave, why not save even more weight by not wearing a helmet?

First of all, as chrism wrote, you've reduced the stiffness quite a lot. Weight saving is good, but not when it affects the stiffness as much as in this case. Second of all, how much weight have you actually saved? Was it worth it?

That´s not worth the effort or the small weight reduction fron 408 to 397 grams, so you guys know now, don´t make same mistake as me.

I had these cranks lying around in my garage and always wanted see how pretty the inside was.

Poor forging process or welding skill is what I see inside.

I always thought that the forging process used in the hollowtech technology was revolutionary and no other manufacturer can reproduce it using the materials (sure Campagnolo do hollow carbon as does FSA).

does anyone know of another crank manufacturer who can do this?

the Dura-ace & Ultegra cranks (which are of course the siblings of the XTR) have been proven to be some of the stiffest cranks available. I would imagine the XTR (all generations) cranks to perform similar againt there counterparts.

I've used 950, 952 , 960 and now 970 (currently using the last three at this time on different bikes) and they have my respect.

I think Cannondale have their HollowGram technology, If it´s exactly same process, I let other tell us that.
But their former CODA (Magic Motorcycle) cranks was glued together.

I always think the XTR group was far better than anything else - adjusted and in good condition.

Shop a little more in Ebay so you can find bargains :)
I rarely pay retail price for parts..

What will be next object to destroy, something really expensive ;)

yeah, good idea, maybe do the same milling to a pair of Clavicula's :twisted: or drill a lot of holes in a Scott Spark frame

Mattias...have you thought about a "next" (raceface) sort of option with this one? ....could make an interesting project!
As for the "stop it's painful" brigade.....many a good part died in the name of progress.....relax! Some of us push the boundary waaaaay past where it should go so we recognise where the "SO ..... THAT DOESN'T WORK" point is......it's sometimes easier to work from the wrong end, back to the beginning. I do prototypes all the time (admittedly, NOT with xtr cranks...but it's all a matter of budget). I think Mattias has indicated this pretty clearly in his posts.
Updated: Racing again! Thought this was unlikely! Eventually, I may even have a decent race!
Edit: 2015: darn near won the best South Island series (got second in age
-group)..woo hoo Racy Theremery is back!!

Theremery: I may take wrong words or use a arasive attitude but I will get the job done, if it don´t work I´m not late with the truth.

These XTR cranks will get sharp corners to great radius treatment, more pleasing to eye and better visual result and hopefully lighter weight.

Shovelon: thanks, maybe useless for you but I know now how the cranks see inside, the pics on web is too pretty.
