Creaking Mavic Cosmic Elite skewers

Hi all,

I just thought I would share an experience with my set of Cosmic Elite training wheels. I have had these wheels for just over 12 months now with no real problems encountered, other than replacing the plastic rim strip with a adhesive cloth one. About 6 weeks ago there was a creak in the back end of the bike which was becoming louder and louder only when I was out of the saddle pushing hard. I went through the process of elimination, things such as the BB, seat post clamp, headset. But to no avail. I finally pinpointed the problem to the rear skewer. I had changed over to my race wheels SL's and the creak went away. HMMMM, so I changed my original Elite skewer with my SL skewer and hey presto it is fine now. Just in case any one else out there is experiencing the same problem. I have just bought a new set of SL skewers from the good ol US of A.

Tried greasing the skewer?

Yup tried that. That would work for a short time a week or so, but would go back to making that horrible noise again. I hate that noise...... but the therapy is helping heaps...... or so my shrink reckons it is. VTIC

I had a pair on my old Giant TCR2...made the same noise. and it drove me insane until a buddy who had a pair of Carbones told me to tighten the front skewer...ALOT more than usual. no more creaks when out of the saddle...problem solved.

Those skewers really suck. When you tighten them quite hard it's impossible to open them again.

While we're talking about creaks.. I had one that wouldn't go away and I couldn't figure out how to fix. It only happend when I stood on the pedals basically.

It started not too long after completely changing the drivetrain - chain, chainrings, cassette.

1) My first thought, bottom bracket needs grease. Took it out, cleaned and greased the threads and cups. Creak still there.
2) Skewer? Took the skewer out, greased it. Creak still there.
3) Tried different skewere. Still there.
4) Tried different wheel (figured those AC micro bearings just may, to my dismay, needed greasing). Nope, creak still there.
5) Greased headset and stem (now, I doubted this was it, but I was desperate). Nope. Still there.
6) Seatpost? This can't be, it happens when I'm standing.
7) Pedals. That must be it! Tried a different pair .. NOPE! Not it.

The only possibilities left were almost inconceivable (or I just didn't want to face it!): frame fracture (Giant TCR Carbon) or.. hard to believe, My Phil Wood BB's bearings need replacement (after 5k miles??).

Finally, the most obvious stupid thing, dawned on me like I forgot I had a nose on my face!! I tightened the chainring bolts. I freekin didn't tighten them enough when I replaced the drivetrain. All that trouble, I may as well have rebuilt the whole freekin bike!

was just about to grease my creaking headset for the second time in a week when i saw this thread and now i got a good excuse to buy a cool pair of skewers for my training ride
