Ivan Basso rode some of the mountain stages in the Giro with 50/36 compact crankset, and was still competitive I would say.

On flat stages for a top sprinter they need 53-11 or maybe even higher.

But the gearing all depends on the course and the type of rider, this bike was probably set up for climbing or maybe only set up for the camera.

Do some research on gear inches. Compact isn't just a fad. It's actually probably one of the greatest things since sliced bread since 10-speed was introduced. A 34/50 with an 11-23 cassette gives you a wider range of gearing with a higher top gear and a lower bottom gear than a 39/53 with a 12-25 and allows you to ride in one chainring for a broader range of cadence/power. Less shifting in the front means less chance of dropping a chain and more time moving the bike forward.

Not to mention the Weight Weenie side effect of having less material on the crank, thus resulting in a lighter crankset, if only just so.

I've done a lot of research into this for a number of reasons, but suffice it to say that while my current Pinarello has a 39/53, my Pegoretti is getting a compact. I might go with a 36/50 only because I don't need that low of a climbing gear where I am but that's besides the point.

Pretty sure the zip tie (ref previous posts) is there so that 1)no one can jump on the bike and ride it away, and 2)no one can turn the cranks just to see them work. Happens all the time at bike shows and such...

Any idea where I can get that 36 tooth chainring? I'd like to change the 34 that came on my Time ASX.

I don't know why they are now showing these pics, but they are not new. These were from a presentation done several months ago.

The zip tie was there because there were no bearings in the cranks yet....There was a supply problem with the bearings.

Also as for it being a compact, orginally,(and when these pics were taken) it was only going to be available as a compact, with different rings. However, after some rethinking, they decided to do a 130BCD in addition to the 110. The JJ riders will be getting the 130BCD, that is if the crank ever actually become available.

Zero Gravity cranks are taking a bit longer to become available than originally expected.

If your crank is 110 PCD, then TA make lots of nice rings. Ask your LBS or online.

I was looking specifically for that coated Stronglight. Thanks though, I think I have it worked out now. :wink:

wow! 17.5lbs in that spec?! i would say don't buy cane creek wheels, because according to the claimed weight of the frame and other components, the wheels must weigh about 5-6lbs to make that bike such a beast. :)

darn, and i was looking at buying a garneau bike. it's a shame.

Or have a high cadence.... or rarely use your largest gear... or don't see big gears but rather speed over an entire ride as a measure of how good a rider you are...

I'm a good climber, and a spinner. Compact appeals to me because I'm not a sprinter, and it is lighter. In about 1994 shimano did it with MTBs, I'm just surprised it has taken so long.
