Conversion from newton meters to inch (or foot) pounds

On a recent ride in Colorado a guy crashed at high speed due to his failure to properly torque his stem- says he was afraid to crucsh his carbon handlebars...... since these torque settings are euro, does anyone know how to convert to US standards?
