That was a truely hideous beast. They were overweight for a concept plane whose only job was to get off the ground. I can imagine how much trouble they would be in to have to produce a plane that was required to do more.

I worked for Boeing on an internship when I was in college so I was pulling for them to win it because I would have had an "in" with the company. Neither my school nor I had connections with Lockheed Martin so I figured if the X-35 won it I'd be without a job at graduation. I still managed to get in.

I can tell you exactly what it is like to change the pegasus engine in a harrier. Wing off, plenum piping out ( a real pig if you drop a bolt). Loads a plumbing, and after all that the engine is still a tight fit.
From memory about 1 weeks 24/12 work. Tornado is about 6hrs (memory again, failing).
I'm not a geek, honest. It was my first job.

Lardy, that's what we're trying to fix on this airplane. The main engine is pretty conventional in that it just slides out the back on rails and onto an engine cart. We're talking about a matter of a few hours; not days or weeks. The LiftFan removal just involves extracting it from the top without removing wings; again, hours. It's going to be so easy compared to the Harrier.

So in the future when you hear young sailor's talk about how hard it is to change engines on the JSF just tell them about the good old days when you were taking wings off of Harriers and hoisting engines at Sea State 6 conditions

Don't make it too easy mind you. If the engine falls out the plane will be stuck in the air for ever!!

drJones - you didngt get asked about naming it, but would you have called it the LW-2000 (hey, its got to have a useless number in there somewhere), the Pina or the Parlee? Or maybe the C-dale?
