Scored a Colnago CX Zero evo for dirt cheap and was digging in my parts bin to build it up.

Will an 11s Athena shifter correctly shift a current model 10s veloce rear derailleur on an 11s cassette?

I have used Chorus shifters with Centaur rear mech in the past and it worked.

The question could be reworded as "are the pull ratios of the Veloce and Athena RDs the same?" to which I would say "yes I believe they are".

"And is the geometry the same otherwise?" to which I would say the same.

Another question might be "are they identical except for the logos?" to which I might say - "they appear to be".

I await with trepidation the slapdown from Graeme, who knows all.

My understanding was 11 and 10 derailleurs had a different actuation and were not interchangeable. This is based on the old style 10 speed components though (I was running Chorus 10). I can't comment on the newer versions.

I know that SRAM 10/11 road rear derailleurs are identical in their action. I've been running the same model Force 11 rd on my road bike with Force 11 shifters and my CX bike with Red 10 shifters for the last couple of years. Maybe Campag is the same - or close enough that it will work?

bikerjulio is probably on the money.

Yep, well, I figured it would be easier to ask it that way :)

The current veloce 10s RD geometry looks extremely similar to the athena RD. I found a mention in another thread that the only difference might be the RD spring rate.

I've got a silver 10s centaur UT crank, most of a silver current model veloce 10s group (ex crank) and carbon athena 11s shifters and black derailleurs. Just hoping to keep it 11s (for compatibility with other bikes) and was just thinking that black derailleurs with a silver crank would look odd. I did 10s red shifters with a force22 groupset for a fair while as well (and its an option here), but the only spare crank I have is that silver centaur UT.

I guess I'll just try it when the frame arrives.

Another question - is the odd BCD pattern on the 10s centaur UT crank (compact) the same as the 11s athena XPSS compact pattern?

yes, it shall work. even better with 11spd pulleys

no, it won't work with post-2015 chorus, and potenza ergos.

but with athena? hell, it'll play along well :)

Your understanding is wrong. Unless you are talking the 2015 and on Chorus/Record. The ratio remained the same from 10 to 11-speed at 1.5:1. Just cable pull per shift changed.

There's a good read here with a demo from yours truly http://forums.roadbikereview.com/campagnolo/newer-veloce-10s-rear-derailleur-shifting-11-speed-320055.html

Thanks for the link, that was exactly what I was after.

I guess I'll be doing carbon athena shifters with a silver veloce drivetrain.

Although I do prefer the newer eps style thumbs, which my veloce shifters have (and athena shifters don't)...

2015 athena shifters have basset hound style release levers

Update:
Tried a veloce med cage for a while. Indexing was perfect. Shifting to a higher gear was a bit lazy on a 12-27 chorus cassette. Shifting down was fine, nice and quiet.
Put my athena RD back on. The cage spring tension felt lower on the veloce and was getting more chain slap. Noticed that the pulleys are also smaller on the veloce. Not sure if it makes a difference.

I guess I'll go find some black brakes & crank instead...
