I'm currently in the market for a light-weight carbon wheelset. I just came across a set of 'Frank' wheels on this site:
http://www.frank-bikes.de/testen.html

I've never heard of these wheels so I was wondering if anyone here has more info on them. Price looks quite good (€799 = $975)

For those who don't speak German, this is the most important info on the site:
- 37,5mm carbon rim
- 20/24 titan spokes
- titan skewers
- 2 year guarantee
- 4 free sets of brakepads in the first year
- weight 564/752 = 1316 gr.
- alu hubs with carbon finish

€799 = $998.75 (it's $1.25=€1.00). Plus there is a 10% duty on complete wheels if you are in the US.

As I type it's actually 1.21168 USD/EUR (see www.xe.com for current rates) and I would suspect the price includes VAT (16% if I remember right), so it may net out significantly less for the USA.

Also I have yet to get charged import duties on anything into the USA that was shipped using a government postal service. Private carriers I have not been so lucky.

VAT (Value Added Tax) or IVA is closer to 20% in Europe!
(And we complain here in the US about 8-10%!!!)
You can deduct that from the cost if the item is shipping out of EU countries (or if a non-EU citizen buys in Europe, you pay VAT at the store, and are then reimbursed upon departure with a special form declaration at the departure border, something most tourists never do).

Of course, shipping can be expensive.

You're right, I hardly ever get charged import on government postal service shippings, but FedEx/DHL, for instance, every time, unless the seller writes "used gift item, for recipient's use only, not for resale" on the Customs Declaration (even then, sometimes FedEx/DHL will make one pay import, if they feel like it I guess).

VAT is a European tax, and it is 16%.

Since each Member State has its own VAT law and, given that the EU has only mandated that the standard minimum VAT must be 15%, rates vary among Member States and among certain types of products.
European Community Member State standard VAT rates range from 15% to 25%.

And in the UK it's 17.5% (except a few things that are 5% (I think) or zero rated (not many of those)).

Best not get me started on the subject of the European Union though.
