What cassette is she using now? 50/34 with 11-32 is quite a broad range, similar to the 30:27 bottom gear a triple with a common road cassette gives you.

Ave - I agree about the hydro levers and has me thinking the possibilities for a gravel bike.

kauphy, I've test ridden the 5800 and I'd say there is a marked difference between 5800 and 6800, more than that of 6800 and 9000. Tactilely, it was quite similar to 5700 save for shorter strokes.

Stating that only difference between 105 and ultegra is weight can lead to a long discussion. The only part that is not as refined is the chain. Every other part from group set is vastly refined.
Shifters made with higher tolerance, better internals
Brakes have better modulation, stiffer and more responsive
Front derailleur provide shorter pull for quicker shifing
Rear derailleur build tougher with upgraded spring and ceramic jockey
Crank is cold forged, rigid, stronger. Build like legendary Dura-Ace.

I think it comes down to what can be felt by the rider. I couldn't detect any difference in shift quality between 5700 on my bike and 6700 on a loaner bike I rode for 3 weeks. The front braking was a little better with 6700 but that's about all I could feel.
I'm currently installing 5800 on my bike but I haven't had a chance to ride it yet. I'll be interested to see how it compares to the 2-3 6800 equipped bikes I test rode.
A rider will never feel build quality. It's all about better internals and quality control. 105 is budget groupset, always has been and always will. Not to mention it's lower resale value. Ultegra parts and build quality is on par with Dura-Ace.

Also, no need to quote above
I don't know why you feel the need to put down 105 while talking up Ultegra as just as good as Dura Ace (insecure Ultegra owner?) Shimano produces group sets at pretty much every price point from Claris up to Dura Ace Di2. I personally couldn't care less how someone else chooses to spend their money.

There's no incentive for me to put down 105 groupset after years of ownership. It's a great groupset and my only intention is to chime on the difference. There's much more to it then weight when you choose between 105 and Ultegra.
