BDOP DIY build kit, good deal?

I'm thinking about ordering this build kit, it looks like a good deal, especially with free shipping worldwide (BHS have a similar kit, but shipping is a killer). Guessing the weight of these wheels will be 1580g ish which is on par with Zondas, RS81 and Ksyriums... sounds a little too good to be true.
What does the board think of this kit? I've read that Kinlin Rims sometimes pulse, I've had a set of XR-300s that did, what are the XC-279s like in that regard?

The XC279s have less brake pulsing than the XR-270s I usually use.
The Novatec hubs are a bit heavier than the BHS hubs but have better flange spacing.

How do the Novatec spacings compare to something like the alchemy ORC? The front hub is ~20mm narrower - is that going to impact on stiffness much?

I'd be surprised if that is the case. There have been threads in the past pointing out that there are a couple of different ways of measuring this - to the center or to the outside, that may make one look more favorable even though they are the same.
Can you back this up?
There's sometimes a buggy.
How many drivers does a buggy have?
One.
So let's just say I'm drivin' this buggy...
and if you fix your attitude you can ride along with me.

I've not measured a Novatech hub.
But you may be right that DS flange spacing is not 19mm on those 11sp hubs. From what I have read that's more than can fit on an 11sp hub. BDop may have copied the numbers from their 10sp hubs. The numbers on novatech USA's site come out to 18.1mm.
Which is still better than BHS but not as much.
Historically Novatch hubs have required a spacer change to go from shimano 10sp to campy 11sp. BHS hubs just need a freehub change. So their DS flange spacing is limited to what works with campy 11sp.

My exhaustive research indicates that the opposite is true - that is that the BHS hub has more favorable spacing than the Novatech cited here.
I have the Novatech as 16.55mm to DS flange centre , and 36.7 NDS
(49.9/2 - 10 + 1.6 = 16.55).
The BHS SL210 is 17.1mm and 37.3mm.
Here's my Novatech evidence
BHS is direct from their site.

Hmm. The specs here: http://novatecusa.net/project/f482sb-sl/
are 56.6mm flange to flange and 10.2mm offset.
If that's measured in the middle of the flange it'd be a DS spacing of 18.1mm.
If it's to the outside of the flanges it'd be 16.5 when corrected to the middle of the flange, which agrees with the diagram you posted.
I've been assuming everyone reports measurements to the middle of the flange... guess I'll have to stop that. Thanks for pointing this out.

dmp wrote:I don't know, but I think you mean the Alchemy ELF- the ORC is a rear hub.
I'm referring to the novatec rear vs the orc. I already know the novatec front is 20mm narrower than the elf
Thanks for the info Eric, bikerjulio
Guessing since this hub isn't as wide as the bhs hubs it won't be comparable to the orc?
What about static capacity? Is there a way to make an educated guess?

Yes, they measure to the outside, which then appears better than the same spacing when quoted to the centre.
From the 11-speed drawing I posted above, the outside dimension is 49.9 + 3.5 + 3.2 = 56.6

OP I see you are in Australia, so understand the comment about shipping.
To answer your original question - yes I think that is a pretty good deal.
Sorry I got sidetracked into weenieisms. I don't believe in the real world these fractions of a mm in hub dimensions make a huge difference. Just buy an appropriate spoke count for your weight and riding conditions.
edit. I see there's only 20 x 24 available. There's no absolute rules about rider weight, but I'd think if you are over 175# then a 28 spoke rear would be safer. The rim looks fairly sturdy so it may be fine, but not if you are into clyde territory.

Thanks for the info, really appreciate you pointing out their outside to outside measurement... I wouldn't have picked up on that and may have gotten the wrong spoke length...
Just as an aside, I reckon a 20/24 would be plenty for my 57kg?
Haha, that's the whole reason why I read this forum - weenieisms don't want this forum to turn into roadbikereview

at 57Kg I wouldn't worry at all. Why are you worrying about spoke length? Kit come with spokes.
It's a steal.

I'm thinking of buying some cx-ray spokes for it... I guess I could always get the kit and copy the spoke length

Aren't CX-Rays $3 each? Wouldn't that kind of blow up the value of these wheels? As a side note I have XC-279's with CX-Rays and Powertap G3 rear and WI T11 front. Great wheels.
BTW, Bdop posts over on bike forums. You could always e-mail him and ask about the spoke length and see if he can quote you a price for the kit minus the spokes. He seems like a really nice guy.
