Just pulled the trigger on one of these things, should arrive tomorrow.

Things that appealed to me:

- round trip routing ability. I don't know the area very well having recently moved here and I'd rather spend my time riding than figuring out where to go.
- navigating home or to a place I know when I get lost.
- uploading other peoples courses that live locally so I can find the better riding spots and follow them.
- the training features and the ability to monitor HR and cadence.
- it telling me when I'm starting and ending a segment so I can track improvements / beat my 'mates'.

It's reasonably lightweight and more durable than my phone. I also don't think it looks out of place on a handlebar (unlike my silver iphone).

Will post some pics tomorrow when it arrives.

Ok my garmin edge 1000 arrived.
I've not been out with it yet but have spent some time setting it up. So far I'm not super impressed I've got to admit. Here's what I've found so far

- difficulties connecting with heart rate monitor
- screen lacks brightness even when switching off the auto brightness feature
- errors when transferring courses from garmin connect
- constant connecting and disconnecting from iphone which results in a beep each time
- picks up GPS signal remarkably quickly
- segments feature looks neat but you do have to pass hem all across from connect one by one
- it's even bigger than you think. The length is ok but this ing is wide too. Looks a bit odd on my bars
- the out front bar mount is very sturdy but results in the garmin being 2-3 degrees off centre which is annoying.
- the speed sensor that is mounted on the hub is pretty big and I don't like the idea of it spinning around directly in my line of sight.
- it's nice and slim though and fits flush with the stem/bars
- when horizontal mode does arrive you will need to loosen 2 screws on the mount in order to turn it so it really is one or the other without getting off the bike and loosening the screws again.
- the manuals suck.
- zooming in and out of the maps is clunky but I guess no different to the 800/810 here.

It's a new product so the firmware is going to be clunky at first but it's not the most slick and intuitive of products.

Just my 2c

Thanks for the first impression.

Din't understand 2-3 degrees you mean mm, so the unit is not in the center?
Could you maybe take a picture from the top?
What is your stem width at the handlebar?
My Look steam is 42mm wide and with the previous Sram mount didn't have the problem, I could fit Aero mount right in the middle.

Sorry about delay.

My degrees I mean mm off centre or seeing as though it's pivoting around a circle a few degrees still stands. The top sits slightly to the right and the bottom to the left. Not by much but noticeable.

I'll take some pictures and measure up tomorrow.

I have just received my unit. I am travelling to the US and want to change the Maps for OSM europe to the equivalent US version. Anyone know how I can do this? Thanks.

Why does it have a speed sensor?
My favorite components are the ones I never have to think about.

When you ride through a heavily wooded area or tunnel you won't have GPS access
