3 weeks in Italy or France ?

Has anyone hired a bike in Bormio, Italy?

I am only there a few days as part of a longer holiday and I don't expect to be riding for the rest of the trip. So thinking it may just be easier to hire a bike for just this time...

We have stayed in Meuble Dante and Picollo Mondo - both B&B and both pretty accomodating.
Heading to Meuble Dante again next week.

Google will help a lot and virtually all establishemnts are bike friendly...

Events today mean I may have a couple of weeks free to head own to either France or Italy.

I'll be travelling light (couple of bags and my bike, not in a case) so need an option that'll carry the bike and not take more than a day (which I get the idea could rule out the Dolomites).

You could head to Verona (they have airport), and get a bus to somewhere around lake of Garda on easter side, so you might have chance to go to ride with local pros (they meet around 9am as far as I know along the road between Bussolengo/Verona).

The location is a good option for both flatter or hillier rides.

If I do Italy, I'll want to be in the mountains.

And as much as I love the Giro, presently it'll probably come down to which country has the better June temps.

Agree with Micky regarding Verona. You've got the he best of both worlds (flat and hilly). I've stayed in Verona and Bardolino and saw groups of pro looking riders every day around Lake Garda. My experience of France and Italy is the weather's nicer in Italy in June.

What climbs are close to Verona? (aside from the Stelvio, Gavia and Mortirolo)?

Another option is Asti (I have family there).


Otherwise Brussels to Saint-Jean-de-Maurienne for 130EU is pretty tempting.

Monte Baldo on the east side of the Lake goes up to 2,200m. However, the 130Euros to St Jean looks a very good deal.

Is Sestriere possible from St Jean? Looks like a 160km out and back?

from St.Jean you must climb Galibier, go to Briançon, then Col Montgenevre, and then get to Sestriere. and back! argh it's about 230 km total.
