So, this season, NBA players make a minimum salary of $490,180 with 0 years of experience, $788,872 with 1 year of experience, etc.

Edit: To address SolidSnake03's post below, I am not providing an assessment as to whether professional cyclists are underpaid or NBA basketball players are overpaid, merely that the minimum salaries for NBA players are much higher than for even ProTour cyclists.

That doesnt mean cyclist are underpaid, it could just as logically be reasoned that basketball is highly overpaid

NBA is also marketed to and followed by millions of times more people in the USA than cycling, same as football world wide, hence those huge salaries.

Not saying it's just or fair but it's reality.

If you want a lot more about finances of cycling, the riders, the races etc etc you should just go read inrng.com Lots in there about it.

In a rainy and cold quarter of France, the 4 days of Demare continues....another gritty stage win (going back to 2013 he's won 6 of the last 7 stages of this race). I really think this kid is destined for big big things.

47000 $ a year, is equal to, in a worst case scenario (taxed in one country at 33%, no sponsors)
22440 euro / 12 months = 1870 euro.

That is about the median of net income in Belgium.
So you can take any random job and you have 50% of earning as much, as you would earn in a pro team.
Démare will hopefully be the next PR winner for France, he is a class act!

I disagree.

The contrast it strikes with a lot of other sports, like basketball and football, is staggering. A World Tour rider could be racing the Tour de France, arguably the pinnacle of cycling (as far as the rest of the world goes) and still be on a what is a median income for a lot of countries.

In what other sport (of comparable size) has their top athletes on such a pittance. I can't think of any.

Isn't Professional Golf based on prize winnings, plus appearance fees and endorsements, as opposed to salaries? So yeah, marginal touring professional golfers won't do very well financially. Same with tennis.

Given what my partners brother gets, as an amateur, I'll again disagree.

I wholehearted feel that all of those sports are drastically over paid even in light of the x1000 fold increase in money they bring in opposed to cycling.

Personally, i dont think any athlete regardless of sport should ever be paid more than a teacher, a doctor, a scientist etc... You are adding entertainment to society but that shouldnt be rewarded financially more than the people in roles that are crucial to the long standing development and success of society as a whole.

Yes i enjoy sports and athletes but at the end of the day your playing a game as your job and as such i cant accept a reason that they would deserve or should earn more than many other professions

i mean salary or no salary, im trying to equalize what a 'PRO' will end up in his/her pocket at the end of the day. Friends who are bartenders or waitresses, get like 2$usd/hr or something, but that doesn't mean their salary is as such. "Performance' based tips and stuff make their yearly earnings higher than their salary.

there is certainly a big spread and discrepancy between the top Golfers and the lowest 'pro' on tour.

just a discussion piece maybe. I too am intrigued. Like is there an actual count of professional cyclists in the world to compare to another sport?

Im also curious to normalize what a professional soccer/footballer makes. We all use the top tier as a 'ZOMG' piece seeing that CR9 and the likes are making 200k a week, BUT what if we normalise div 3, div4 ,div5 footballers around the world. Who arguably would make much less, and also be in greater number than the top teir? Im not saying the final calculation is anywhere close to cycling (well im not sure), but that would be an interesting thing to find out in my opinion. And instead of average, use median.

I'd really like a guess as too how many pro cyclists exist, defining a pro based on the conti, pro domestic, and worldtour definitions (i dunno what other definitions exist).

Almost every other sport aside from Soccer, American Football, American Baseball, and American Basketball. 90% of olympic athletes get paid almost nothing. I used to date one of the top female olympic weightlifters in the world and she got a stipend and room and board at training camp before the games, that's it. A former roommate of mine is now a pro XC skier and he makes around $1k/month except during ski season when he gives lessons and works at a resort. A good friend of mine was a pro golfer (2nd tier) and like all other pros trying to break into the PGA Tour, he worked 2 jobs at 2 golf courses to make ends meet between getting prize money. Considering all of this I have absolutely no sympathy for those that are just expecting a great salary for being at the low end of the professional scale. Sure, it sucks, but if you love doing this and want to make it to the next level it will always require some sort of sacrifice. Given the fact that many people make far less out of college and directly increase the productivity of society I lose my last bit of sympathy. Reading Phil Gaimon's book he got dicked over by sponsors and teams constantly, but he weathered through it, got results, and made it. He got in his car and drove to races. He reflects on it with the attitude of "yah it sucked, but I'm a pro in Europe now so it was worth it".

American athletes are stupidly overpaid, but sponsors want spectacles and they're willing to pay for it. Sponsor $$ wise cycling has to have one of the lowest ROI's of any major televised sport and salaries reflect that. If you think about it that way, how much does United Healthcare gain from sponsoring a team? Do you think any American actually decides to use their health insurance just because of the cycling team? On the conti level $47k is far, far more than most people make in the U.S., but at the same time relatively few of them ever make it to the top level. I do not profess to know every neo-pro's salary, but the ones I have seen were quite good and above the UCI minimum.

It's not just American sports figures that are overpaid... What does a British premier league player get annually? Or a champions league player?

Professional athletes negotiate their wages, so it's difficult to make an argument that they are under or overpaid. If cycling generated the sort of annual revenue that the NFL does I'm pretty sure we'd see the same type of salaries.
